Rowan is a MONEY GRAB especially for transfers. They want your $$ for expansion and the quality of many programs suffers. My nephew went to their open house as a transfer. It was basically - fill out this index card and you’re in. Computer science program with over 200 kids and they basically left transfers come right in?
The Engineering school however has a great rep so its all based on your major.
@NJWrestlingmom You must’ve made a math error because Ramapo is around ~25-6k for in-state students.
Secondly, I never claimed it was the best in-state school. Rutgers and TCNJ are for sure the best publics in NJ. I stated it was in the best area.
Where I live, Rowan does not have a great reputation. Perhaps you live close by to Glassboro… I certainly do not.
In my family, we have always had to wait some time for a mental health appointment, usually several weeks if not longer. I had one kid suffering for years because I could not find one child psychiatrist who was in our network and had an opening. After much time and searching I finally found one out of network. Many people could not have afforded that. I still schedule counseling visits for my kid who still needs it several months in advance.
Once I scheduled an appointment four months out, and the provider canceled at the last minute and we had to start over.
I’ve had friends who had to resort to taking their kids to a hospital mental health crisis center or call the police to be able to get an order for hospitalization when there was a risk of self-harming because they had no other option to get care when they needed it. I know of four families that went through that in the last couple of years.
That is the state of mental health in our area at least. There’s a serious shortage of providers. It’s not just Rowan. It just falls very short of what it should be.
The sad thing about the Rowan situation is that the kid who committed suicide was from an area relatively close by. I think it is tragic that he was unable to get help close to home, because according to reports he had tried to get help at Rowan.
Perhaps this strikes a particular chord with me because I have mutual friends with the student who took his own life. I don’t know.
I just feel as though college is a rather volatile time in a person’s life, and mental health resources are of the essence during such tumultuous times.
@aznboi4981 You are completely right about that. And it is a blessing when campus counseling centers provide the help they should.
One thing that I wish would change is that student health insurance programs would cover mental health services, so that a student who is away frim home might have options if they were not able to get timely help in campus.
I don’t really make use of mental health services. Only this year, because it was required after the hurricane. What really worries me is the fact that I don’t think I’ll get financial aid and I don’t really want my parents to help me alot. Can I pay with student loans? Also, when you talk about tuition, is it for example 30,000 a year or is it twice a year?
If you are able to live with your mom, it will save you a lot of money. I think tuition is around $13,000 and you pay half of that each semester. Room and board is about $13,000 a year.
You can only get between $5,500 and $7,500 in loans per year. The amount depends on what year you are classified in after transferring.
That does’nt sound so bad. I will be living with my mom and I get the Fafsa which is around 10,000 a year. Do you think I can get other financial aid as a transfer? Or is it just for high school students? Sorry if I make alot of questions, the entire process is very different from the one here in the island.
It wasn’t a math error, it was clearly broken down line by line in the admissions paperwork. I live no where near Rowan and the school has a great reputation in our area. Now… enough arguing with a kid on the internet!
@Stephaniiiie if I have time I will look at the Rowan site later today. They have different merit awards listed in their course guide for current students. I’ll see if they mention transfers. Also, in the fall they sent out an email to all students with instructions to apply for about 200 various, smaller scholarships. They ranged from a few hundred to several thousand. Every bit helps! You’d be eligible to apply once you’re a student.
@NJWrestlingmom Please do not act condescending. That is not what this forum is about. We have a difference of a opinion, which is okay. There’s no need to discount me as “a kid.” It’s rather rude. This is a positive forum where we build each other up - not tear each other down.
Telling me I made a math error in computing the cost to send my child to college seems a bit condescending to me.
@NJWrestlingmom Well you must have, because the tuition is laid out on their website. Let’s not spread misinformation on the forum.
The tuition level I gave earlier is for instate. I hope you would be able to get that rate.
For what it’s worth, if you don’t get instate tuition or if the price isn’t affordable, you might want to consider working locally for a year. You might even be able to get a job at Rowan.
@Stephaniiiie in-state tuition at Rowan is currently $9660 per year in state and $18128 out of state, plus you need to add in all the fees which will add several thousand. There is continuing student merit listed, but there’s not breakout. If you’re accepted and decide to attend, I’d reach out to financial aid and I’m sure they could direct you to all available resources. They’ve been extremely helpful to us this past year. Good luck!
It might help to look at this page. Required fees are added to tuition and bring up tuition to around $13,000. https://www.rowan.edu/home/financial-aid/cost-attendance
She’s been having a hard time with deciphering a school’s tuition, so I thank you for rectifying.
She was correct about tuition. Fees can sneak up on us.
Fees are horrible everywhere. It’s like they are selling you a car. It very confusing and I thing colleges like it that way.
