There is a new math competition that is gaining popularity in the USA.
It is called MATHKANGAROO, and since I have been personally involved in organizing it for the past two years I have already seen it grow and flourish. It is a great extracuriccular thing for smart kids as it uses logic and combinatorics.
To find out more and to register go to www.mathkangaroo.org
I can also answer any questions you might have.
Kelowna

It's a decent site but the name is a turn-off. Sounds like some game for 6-year-olds.

I've heard of this. I checked the states hosting the tests, but no west coast states. Do you know how can I involve this?

Sup - the name mathkangaroo, hence it originated in Australia.

Northwestern - you can become a local host. E-mail organizers at info@mathkangaroo.org to find out what to do. You can approach the school about hosting it or you can do it a local library. They will generally ask you to recruit at minimum number of participants (like 8 or10).
I host it at my kid's school in the evening. Teachers help, and each year we have more and more kids participating.
It cost 20 dollars per child. For that each student gets a t-shirt, two small gifts, certificate of participation. Student that place in the top get more.
The questions from previous years are posted online. Check them out, they are quite fun.

Thank you. I'd better look into it.

thanks
i should apply for this test

it kind of looks like math olympiad to me

It is more difficult than Math Olympiad - keep reading the questions, the further you get into the test, the more difficult they become.
Plus you can take it all the way to 12 grade.

Registration is open for MATH KANGAROO 2009.

It is a good idea, and should bring some math interest.

Take a look at some USAMO problems and the solutions ;)
