New Orleans City Park?

Curious on how accessible the park is from Tulane? It looks like they have great fishing there but not sure if it is a safe bike ride from campus.

Well, it’s only about 5 miles but you do have to go through some sketchy areas.

The neighborhoods are fine, but there’s not a great bike route connecting the two, so there would be areas of high traffic congestion where being on a bike is not the best idea. You would want to map it carefully and get to the bike route on Jefferson Davis near Washington Ave, then follow Jeff Davis to Bayou St. John. Follow Bayou St. John to the park.

@vistajay your view as a NOLA resident may be different than a new student resident to the city. I have a freind that lives off of Claiborne near Carrolton and she is constantly telling me about the muggings and car break ins. Same with another friend who lives on Carrolton. But then I have friends who ride bikes out that way all the time from Oak Street…guess it depends which streets you take

@dolphnlvr6 I was suggesting a route away from the Carrollton corridor. Too much traffic along Carrollton for college aged bike riders, IMO. The Carrollton and Claiborne area is not good to live near or at night, but is fine during the day. If I were a Tulane student I would be too lazy to bike to City Park, but if I did do it I would take Willow or Claiborne to Nashville, take Nashville to Fountainbleu, take a right on Fountainbleu to Octavia, left on Octavia until cross Wash Ave and get on the bike path on Jeff Davis then follow to Bayou St. John. Probably takes 30 minutes.

Gotcha. Just want to ad that I love City Park, so much to do and see in addition to fishing!

My D worked at the library just off City Park her last semester. She would load her bike on the bus, get off near City Park and ride the rest of the way. While vistajay’s workaround route does the job of avoiding the higher traffic (and sketchier) areas, it is pretty indirect. Which is fine if you want to have a nice bike ride and have the time. But dolphnlvr is right that there are a lot of incidents in that area, especially Holly Grove and just on the other side of Claibourne. I would get crime reports daily for that whole western half of Orleans Parish when my D was there and almost all the serious crime would be in that area. Of course there is much more crime in the eastern half of the Parish, but Tulane kids don’t get there much.

I would also suggest that your child check and see if there is a fishing club or something similar, or if they might want to start one. Then other transportation options might become available. Also might be able to gt to more interesting fishing spots on the weekends (not that there is anything wrong with City Park!).

It might be best to just befriend a sophomore who likes to fish and has a car! But I think the fishing club is a great idea! I didn’t see on on the Student Organization list.

That is what I was hinting at with the club idea. Although it is also possible that being an official club might allow other modes of transportation to become available at no charge or paid for by the university. I didn’t see such a club either, but I do remember working with a CC member on this forum about a diving club. I don’t fish, so I might be off base on this. But if the diving club still exists and they take trips to spots in the gulf, it might be possible to tag along and fish while they dive. Or learn diving as well, of course. Spear fishing is still fishing, right? ;)
