New Paltz SUNY vs. Stony Brook!

My son is a very quiet person. He is not very social and in simple words he considers himself “a nerd”! We have visited Stony Brook and are planning to visit New Paltz as well. Which one of these colleges are better for Computer Science ? I know that computer science at SB has a very good reputation and I’ve heard New Paltz also has a very good Computer Science program. By the way: My son is in 12 grade and has taken college level programming in 11 grade with a 98 final grade, and he is taking college level Stat this year. He has a 1880 SAT and GPA of 3.6. Could anyone help us find out which one of these two colleges would suit him better? Thanks.

Wouldn’t he apply to both?

Stony Brook is better known, but for the most part it really doesn’t matter where one gets an undergraduate CS degree. If your son likes New Paltz more, he should go there.

your son should go to new paltz where he will be accepted and welcomed and will find a niche. stony brook is 3x the size and has a large commuter population, large international population for sciences esp. he may feel isolated. new Paltz is known to be artsy, eclectic, nonjudgmental. it’s a small town near a river, beautiful area.

Stony Brook is not a pleasant place to go to university. Almost everyone’s from Long Island an goes home for the weekend. Consequently there is little campus life. I think New Paltz would be a better choice. More diversity there.
