I am debating if I am going to go to New Paltz, Binghamton, or Stony Brook (still awaiting a decision… transfer student) for Comp Sci. I really like New Paltz because of the smaller class sizes but I read somewhere that it was difficult to get into classes due to that. I also worry that I would be way ahead of the curve: the average act is a 25 and mine is a 32. I want to be around people I can have an intellectual conversation with and New Paltz would be a party school… but so would every other school out there. I also want to study Korean and they don’t even have that. I wonder if it would be worth my time just because of the smaller class sizes… but then again, 200 - 500 people in a class doesn’t strike me as learning I can’t get online for free. Stony Brook seems really good because it has a concentration in Game Design but the class sizes are so frightening.
I feel like Binghamton or Stony Brook would be your better bets. They are both known for having great STEM programs and overall good academics that would be more on par with your intelligence. That being said, I would recommend Binghamton more only because the students at Stony Brook don’t tend to stick around the campus making it feel more like a ghost town. You would have much more of a sense of community at Binghamton with a comparable education. In terms of class sizes, SUNYs will give you a mixed bag with some large lecture classes and intimate small ones.
Thank you! I think if I get accepted into Stony Brook, while it is true I like Binghamton’s atmosphere better, I will go to Stony Brook only because it has a concentration in game design. I know that Binghamton is better then New Paltz, but it doesn’t have the same ability to study game design, I don’t think (after doing some research but correct me if I’m wrong), and while New Paltz doesn’t either, I would rather be in guaranteed smaller class sizes.
