new ranking system!

AH!!!!! There might be a new ranking system with no valadictorian, salutatorian, etc. Instead they give a bunch a people these strange names like summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude. ***?!?!?!?!?! im so mad right now!! People have worked hard for their ranking and perfer that colleges see all of the work they've done.

colleges will still see ur ranking. however, graudation they will only here the latin names that u listed.

I don't see what the big deal is about, that's how they do it in college....

Are they still going to rank numerically at all (without the valedictorian/salutatorian titles)? If so, there shouldn't be a problem, since colleges will just see the numerical rank.

Ugh I know what you're going through!! My district is starting the Cum Laude system with the class of 2008! It's so unfair! They're not putting rank on our transcript, but just QUARTILES!

Well, my counselor said there would still be ranking to tell to colleges but they're taking it off transcripts and no val/sal at graduation!!

I'm going to be either val or sal so I'm upset about this...no formal recognition at graduation. :(

(!)

I don't know much details about it yet, but it was in the newspaper and said it could start as early as next year!!! I mean comeon! It's because this kid took an illegal wine tasting class with college credit and bumped hm up to val and we even found a site that says the class was illegal!! It's the parents and gc that are to blame!! They signed off that they could take the course.

I thought there were certain restrictions on which classes counted for 6.0 credit...my friend tried to take Fundamentals of Engineering (to bump up her HPA) and it counted as 4.5. And Discrete Math counts for 4.5 too...

Oh well, wine tasting = funny story :D

^^^ there is!!! that's why I'm so mad!!! It's a restricted class that he was granted permission to that was worth a 6.0!!! My parents even found the site and is really mad along with my brother that is ranked pretty high in his class.

wine tasting is hard stuff. he might deserve that credit, if it weren't illegal.

^^What exactly do you do in wine-tasting? Do you just sit around and...try to distinguish between different flavors of wine?

(I'm curious. Unless you were kidding :D)

^^^ im not kidding sadly lol..its called wines of the world and i think u have it right lol

We still have valedictorian and salutatorian, but they aren't formally recognized at graduation. At most schools, it seems like the valedictorian gives a speech, but at my school, random kids chosen by the principal do. I wasn't even sure who valedictorian was last year, because the class officers graduate/ walk in first. (I'm not sure how other schools do this, but the only 'recognition' that the top ten get is that they walk in first and get special gold neck-thingies on their gowns). The names of the valedictorian and salutatorian (and rest of the top ten) aren't even written on the program. It makes me angry... Maybe no one else is bothered by this, and it only angers me because I'm probably going to be valedictorian or salutatorian... but even if I were ranked right in the middle of my class, I think that I would want the top ten to be recognized.

hahah wine tasting. where the heck did he take a wine tasting course? i mean i know that cornell has a wine tasting course, but that college.

i think he took it at FAU for dual enrollment

At my school valedictorian and salutatorian give speeches and walk in last. Good stuff. Now I've just gotta figure out what to say.

check out the val/sal thread int he parent's forum. There are a lot of good reasons why the rankings are messed up.

why wouldn't colleges recognize the cum laude system? its what THEY use...

World of Wines is one of the most popular classes at FAU, actually. A lot of people come in thinking it's just people sitting around drinking wines. Actually, that's a very small part of it -- a better name for the class would be "The Geography and History of Wines."

It may not seem like it, but it's a legitimate class. All courses at FAU are put through an intensive, intensive faculty review process, same as every other university.

And from what I've heard, it's not an easy class.

There are actually a lot of cool classes offered at FAU. This one, an engineering class called "Innovative Thinking," "Philosophy of Psychiatry," "Didgeridoo" (forgive me if the spelling is off), "Environment and Disease," etc.

We also have Japanese as a foreign language. You not only have to learn how to speak it, but write it in both hiragana and katakana. It's really intense, but it's also a good way to meet hardcore anime fans (we also have a Japanese manga/anime club here).
