New SAT or old SAT? That is the question.

As many of you are aware of, the SAT is changing up a bit. I am a part of that lucky/unfortunate transition class who will be the first to take the new SAT. I am currently a sophomore and will be taking the PSAT this year. Next year I will have the option to take the old SAT or I can take the PSAT for the new SAT. In my Senior year I would have the ability to take only the new SAT. My questions is.... Which do I try to focus and study for? Should I take both? Thanks!

You will have the option to take the old SAT in Oct, Nov, Dec & Jan of your Jr year and the new SAT in March, May & June. Fall of your Sr year will offer additional test dates with the new format. I should say that I have not researched this since the original announcements last spring, but that had been the proposed schedule the last time I looked. Your sophomore year PSAT will be the old format and your Jr year PSAT will be the new format, even though the old format SAT will be administered through Jan of your Jr year.

Since you are inquiring as a sophomore, I would start prepping for the old SAT next summer and take the old version of the exam twice between Oct and Jan or your Jr year.

You should take the old SAT because they are more resources out there for it.

I agree with the previous post. There are a plethora of books that have deeply analyzed the current SAT such as the The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar, so I think that would be your best bet.

I’m a sophomore and got a good score on ACT a month ago. I’m going to take the new PSAT and old SAT in Oct. 2015. If I’m not happy with the old SAT result, I will take the new SAT in spring 2016. If I don’t like any of the result, I just use my ACT score :)

@123PSAT - You can order the QAS from the Oct 2015 SAT and then use that info to prep for the Jan exam. The QAS may not reach you in time to be of any use for the Dec exam, but you will have time to study for Jan. Not disagreeing with your strategy, but just suggesting a slight revision if your Oct score is decent but not quite as high as you would like. Retaking old format SAT might be easier than prepping for a new SAT or the ACT.

Thanks for your advice, CT1417! I wish I can take the old PSAT to qualify the national merit scholarship. Sadly, I have to take the new PSAT in Oct. 2015 during my junior year. How do they use the old SAT score to confirm the new PSAT for NMS?

My son is in the same position as you, so I realize that you have to take the new PSAT. I was just suggesting that you might want to take another stab at the old SAT before the format change, assuming that your first attempt does not produce the desired result.

Re: using old SAT format score to confirm PSAT for NMS….I am fairly sure I read in another thread that a parent had called and confirmed that even tests taken this school year will be considered for confirming NMS for the class of 2017.

Best of luck to you.

Considering the amount of prep material for the current one, I’d say write that BUT be prepared in case you want a higher mark or think you could to better as a senior. You may end up taking both. Either way, there’s new prep materials out for the new one already, so if you need to you can prep for that one.
