New SAT

Hello all. I received my new SAT score today and was pretty happy to get a 1510 (750 reading + writing and 760 math). However, my essay score was quite poor (2, 4, 6) and I’m wondering if Ivies will put me at a disadvantage for that? Also, apparently a 1510 equates to a 2190 on the old SAT, but I don’t know if that’s in the range for Ivies…Any help would be awesome!

No its a 2260 not 2190 you double your reading scores and add the math

Right but apparently Collegeboard significantly inflated the score of the New SAT. Also, because of certain things like “no deductions for guessing” and such, the system does not exactly work that way. @a20171

i got the same score actually 1510
720 english
790 math

i assumed it was a 2265 because based on the percentiles of the 2400 scale and 1600 scale it seems just doing x3/2 is a pretty decent conversion. It could also be, like what Bryanviolinist said, 2(720)+790=2230. Also I got all 7/8 on the essay subscores so potentially I could look at that as 700+720+790=2210. Theres so many ways to make assumptions about conversions…

If anyone has any information about “conversions” or how the essay affects your score, please let me know! I would like to see where I actually stand with this score.

@keshin https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/educators/higher-ed/scoring-changes/concordance

The CB released these concordance tables so you can plug your scores in and figure out how it compares to the old SAT.

@Bryantviolinist I would guess that a 1510 is fairly borderline for most Ivies. I’m sure many folks with those scores will be admitted, but that would be in the bottom half of the scores at most Ivies. If you look at the concordance tables it corresponds to a 33 on the ACT. You might consider taking it again. If you do, study the grading rubric for the essays and make sure you understand it. They aren’t just looking for clever writing. They are supposed to be looking for some very specific things. If you understand how they are grading the essay, you should be able to bring that score up a good bit.

But since Ivies admit a diverse group, I am guessing that the Ivies will accept more 1500 SAT kids who are URM, rather than a white or Asian female.

@Bryantviolinist @keshin Congrats on your high scores, and like candjsdad said I’m pretty sure ivy leagues will admit you with those scores as long as your extracurriculars etc. are on par with their expectations.

Also could you give me some guidance on how you prepped for the new exam and tell me what materials/books you used?

Hi, @seaberry! Honestly, it was a whole lot of constant test taking. If you continue to do test after test, you’ll find yourself slowly getting into the zone. Use a wide variety of books. Of course, get the Blue Book as it is directly from collegeboard. However, use Princeton Review, Barrons, and other books of the sort as well. They all can give you helpful information as to how you can increase your score.
