New Student Convocation

I am a transfer student coming from a different college. Do i have to go to the New Student Convocation, as i am not technically a first year college student. I didn't even get a book during Preview to read.

Also, should i attend the Engineering new student convocation (12:30pm later the same day)?

Wouldn’t hurt to go to both, you could meet new people

I am a transfer too, and got the same email. But if you read the convocation website it says its for class of 2015, and specifies that high school students with AAs need to go. It says nothing about transfers or regular AAs. I assume that because they didn’t include transfers and regular AAs and only specified high schools students with AAs its really only for “freshman”. Also, we didn’t get a book, and no one said anything at orientation. Given these facts, I do not believe its really for transfers from other universities and we just got the email because we attended an orientation, and its probably a mass email, which they didn’t bother separating from the transfer orientation email list.

I just got off the phone with my college’s adviser, she said that for transfers is not mandatory but if you’re in town is not a bad idea to go. That is basically a meet and greet with your college’s faculty and staff, so you can show your face, get to know them outside of the classroom, start building your network etc… She said if it’s too boring you can always leave since it’s not mandatory for you. Then I asked her about the book, and she said to not worry about it, it’s not a big deal.

IMO just for the fact of meeting professors ahead of time it’s worth going, also I will have to take a couple of classes with the freshmen because they didn’t offer those in my CC, so I might as well show up and meet some people before the first day of class. If I feel like it’s a waste of my time I am allowed to leave, so I think you might wanna go if you 're in town, and have nothing more important to do other than sleeping in -you have to be there at 8:00am

It’s pretty lame. Don’t waste your time unless you have to go.

@mathsciencedude do the administrators actually check if you go or not. If they don’t they really should not call it “manadatory”.
