The oberlin new student orientation begins on August 30th. I am going overseas and is still trying to get a cheap price for the trip.
So, I wanted to know if the orientation for new students is absolutely essential and will there be any repercussions such as not being able to sign up for classes, not meeting the advisor, etc.

Obviously you HAVE to attend new student orientation. You don’t want to be running around like a confused cockroach after classes have started with no idea where anything is.Also, finalisation of class schedules and certain placement tests for certain classes are offered during orientation and if you miss those then…I just don’t know how you would fix that.

Check the schedule of the orientation online on Oberlin’s website - it’s not really the kind of orientation where set you up to meet friends and enjoy recreational activities as a main objective, there are lots of stuff about guidelines and facilities on campus, so don’t miss it
Btw are you an international student? Because intl’ orientation starts Aug 28th I think.

@NYandere - The new students orientation schedule is here (it’s a PDF, by the way).

If you’re not an international student, your only real flexibility is what time you arrive on the first day, Tuesday, August 30th. You are required to attend things starting on Wednesday morning, including placement tests for math/science/language, auditions for performance groups, new housing meetings, and meeting with advisers and registration.

From a personal perspective, the weather is completely awesome for orientation week, and I recommend not missing it at all.

Thanks Maayan! Does this mean first year international students mostly get the campus to ourselves for a few days before domestic students arrive?

@Drelnis - Yes, to some extent (there will be some upperclassmen here, plus many fall sport athletes are already on campus), but there are some additional required sessions for international students during those few days as well.
