New Student Orientation

So how bad is it to go to NSO on one of the last days it's offered? Between my D's very late HS graduation (June 24-25 activities), summer job and my week-long business trip in early July, it's the only time she can get down there that they have available (her summer job is in the middle of nowhere so she has no way to get to UD except for me driving her).

All 8 am or 9 am classes? Will she be closed out of required classes? I'm sure that's a real possibility. What else?

My D was assigned for July 16. I was meaning to ask you what the plan was for your daughter.

That’s the day we will be there too! I’m going to get a hotel from Priceline for the night before as we will be driving down from MA. That’s all I know so far. I’m still reeling from all the re-arranging of my schedule today (including plane flights) to make this possible. I’ll PM you before then so we can make plans to meet.

I look forward to it! Will it just be you and your D?

Delaware usually does a pretty good job in alloting enough slots in courses so that new students should not be closed out of required first year courses in their major (if they were accepted into a specific major). This is especially true for students in the Honors Program. There may be more competition for getting courses to meet the various group requirements but even here the courses available are usually either very large or have multiple sections. As with most universities first year introductory courses are often scheduled at less desirable times for students (i.e. Monday 8:00 am or Friday 3:00pm) but this is all part of the “college experience” (actually when you think about it this is more like the real world that the students will have to deal with in the future). As I indicated in a previous post in another thread I would also recommend that you monitor course/section availability on the Delaware couse selection website (just for your info - Honors course sections usually end with the numbers 080, 081, 082 and so on). If you check the night before you go you might be able to find courses/sections/professors that you would prefer. I wish your daughter luck in getting the courses she requires/needs. I really would not overly worry about this.

D has june 26th as her orientation date and S has July 16th. I am trying to reschedule my D’s date to the 16th but now you have me thinking about course selection. Never even gave classes being full a thought…hmmmm.

zoosermom: yes, it will just be D and me.

Jbe: D got assigned 6/24, but she has graduation activities that day. If you want to change your date, email them right away. They told me which dates are still open - I will check the email and see if 6/26 is even open (actually - you must have 6/25, because 6/26 is a Satrday). They couldn’t get D in on 6/23 or 7/6 - completely full, they said. If you decide on July 16, let me know! (just checked - 6/25 is still available, as is 7/16)

mwallenmd: thanks for the tip on checking courses (and profs) the night before - really good idea!
