New Student Union

Hey when I attended UF: Library West was under construction for basically half of my undergraduate experience (I had already graduated before it was fully completed, and never got to enjoy the new amenities). I would have gladly thrown some dollars to the administration to get the restoration done at a more expedited pace.

Meanwhile SGA was throwing money towards artsy-fartsy junk that could of helped move the project along. The point is: this is a significant project that will greatly improve the experience at the University of Florida. I know for a fact: freshmen truly utilize this facility, and it will be a big draw for bringing in the right kind of applicants to this esteemed university. Granted when undergradutes reach (sophomore - senior status) the union becomes less important, however potential applicants are not thinking of this when they ultimately pull the trigger on the school that they actually attend.

ALSO: how can we sit idle while Ohio State dropped over $100 million to improve their student union? I honestly think the student body should buck-up and pay the fee for the good of the university.

Lastly: The graduate & professional students do not have a leg to stand on when it comes to paying higher fees. They already have amazing facilities to support their education, and they should in turn not stand in the way of expanding the union.

The new study center will be REAL nice. I can’t stand it when library west and marston library are crowded a lot and all the computers are taken…I’m like ***, this is an issue that shouldn’t exist at UF (especially when you need to log on UFL, print an assignment etc, time is of the essence).

Does tearing down a fully functional building and then spending $100 million dollars to make a new one sound like a very efficient way to get enough computers? Everyone has a laptop anyway.

Not everybody has a printer though, and UF doesn’t have any way to print without using a computer. At some other schools, there are systems where you can even print stuff using any wireless internet capable device. I think such a system would be invaluable for UF.

That is exactly my point, why do we need to spend $100 million on a building when there are much simpler ways to let people print stuff.
