New User/ Recent College Graduate Worried About Future Outlook

Ive always been a lurker reading through the posts on this site for awhile but now it seems I need some advice of my own.

I'm graduating college this month with a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from NJIT. My overall GPA is about a 3.0 (closer to 3.1 than 3.0). My major GPA (Mechanical Engineering courses) is right at 3.3. The last three semesters of my college career Ive been making Dean's list, not sure if that's important to employers or not. I'm gonna assume for any perspective employer these GPA values don't look that inviting. Another problem is I have no experience in the field via either internships or jobs. Due to these issues mentioned above, I'm worried about my future out of college. Just looking for advice for someone in my position. Thanks for any help.

Have you looked for full time employment through your school’s Career Center?

stay positive, keep trying.

ive been interviewing all year and just got an offer after finals week. crazy it took so long, but there is hope.

Sorry for the late response. I did visit my schools Career Center and they told me to register on their site and put up my resume. I also have another meeting with them scheduled.

My question is what would my resume look like with no experience via internships or jobs. What should I do about that?

I keep hearing about graduating seniors thinking about jobs during their last semester. Unfortunately, waiting until your final semester to go full force to look for employment is a major disadvantage. Many employers begin their recruiting in the fall (or before) and have most, if not all, their positions filled by the first of the year. I know of several seniors who just graduated this month who had their jobs offered to them at the end of last summer.

With that said, visit corporate websites. Many have online job submissions. Visit other colleges career sites and find listings of companies hiring that may not visit your campus. Since you are in NJ, check out Stryker and Becton Dickenson. Visit the career sites for GE, Proctor and Gamble, Boeing, PPG, etc. I believe they all have online job descriptions and application submission. Most of the employers require a minimum 3.0 GPA for job consideration.

From what I have seen, it seems that it was/is a good year for MEs to get jobs. I wish you good luck.

I always felt that a resume should always be ‘a work in progress’. I recommend that students should start developing a resume in high school and edit it each year by adding new items and deleting items that no longer seem pertinent. By junior year in college, each student should have a fairly well developed resume. When you state that you have no experience via internships or jobs, do you mean relating to ME or no jobs of any kind ever? Although it is a disadvantage not having an related internship or job, any job should be included in a resume. Also, any extracurricular activities you truly participated in during college. Do a search on resumes for recent college grads. There are a lot of sample resumes on the internet. They should help you develop a resume that can work for you.

Thanks for the response.

What I mean by no internships or jobs is I haven’t had anything major worth noting since high school. Even the internships during high school had nothing to do with mechanical engineering.

What did you do the past few summers? Did you work? If you did work, then put those down in your resume. Employers like to see actual work experience even they might not be mechanical engineering related.

boosted-
Did you do a senior design capstone project? You can use incorporate that into your resume as related experience. Also, think about any other major engineering related projects you completed during undergrad. Check out the websites of large universities with large engineering departments. They generally will have a variety of sample student resumes online that might give you some direction.

Christian2,
The last couple of summers all I did was take 3 to 4 classes. This was due to the fact that I switched over to mechanical engineering late. So to catch up I had to take a heavy course load over the summer.

Karp4170,
I did do a senior design capstone project. For the amount of work and time I put in, I would hope that would be on my resume somewhere. I also did a few cad projects during my senior semester as an elective class. I also had some cad projects before then also working with pro engineering.

Again I can’t thank you guys enough for the help.

If you are applying for a job in mechanical engineering and have no experience, you can always include relevant courses you’ve taken on your resume that applies to the job you are applying for.
