New Year, New Look for College Confidential!

I have not noticed anyone using the “Like” or “Helpful” buttons. They will make the usual comments noticing, thanking, or appreciating a post, but don’t hit the related buttons.

Thought I would check back in to see if there were any updates–can see that there are not. Really disappointed in this, particularly the inability to see if new posts have been created in a particular college’s forum (without having to manually click on the college to see if there are new ones). I think this really hurts the less popular schools…how many people are going to click on, say, “Butler University” on a daily basis to see if there are new posts? However, if you were someone that had knowledge of Butler and could easily see/be notified that there was activity on that forum (like you used to be able to), you would probably pop in to see if you could answer a question.

To any one that is listening or reading this from cc: I have kids that are currently looking at schools (juniors), so I am interested in a variety of the college forums. I used to visit the college sub-forums (ie, Top CC Universities, Alphabetical list of Colleges, etc) almost daily just to pop in and see where there was activity. The process of clicking on each college to see if there is a new post (and it seems there is even less now–maybe just my perception) is just not efficient. Have to say, you are losing my interest in this site.

^^ No one from CC is listening.

Yes, that’s better. "Take it or leave it. "

I’ve been a long time lurker and finally made an account because browsing on my phone became just too difficult post change over. I find myself on here significantly less now that I’ve made an account. I don’t like the changes at all and I’m upset by the fact that the admins seem to have completly abandoned even pretending to care about what their customers have to say.

Nothing new what’s happening here – has happened before on other sites. The admins/mods/whatever-they-call-themselves have committed to the new format. There is only so much time/$/personnel for making changes. “Caring” is just a word. Most changes wanted by the posters will never happen, I suspect.

Some changes are more significant than others, I’d say.

Too much white space? Don’t like avatars? Well, that’s how they’ve designed the look, take it or leave it.

But - unable to conveniently keep up with forums you care about, because you might have a connection to the particular college or EVEN (perish the thought) you might have a kid in the application process and want to get info on their schools? That is to say, you want to actually use the site for its central purpose? That’s worth beating the drums about.

bjdkin–if you bookmark the thread, you will be able to see when there are new comments. (That will show up at the top of the page as a red number next to your screen name.)

Edit: meant to say thread not forum

Agree with bjdkin and requin - cosmetic issues aside, I think the biggest problem is the inability to see which forums or subforums have had new activity. The Musical Theatre forum is another example of a forum with subforums that can’t possibly ALL be checked individually just to see if anyone happened to post anything. :frowning:

ditto. I liked i when you went to one site that listed all the subforums I was subscribing to and which ones had new posts AND EVEN NEW THREADS!! WITHOUT me having to have to search that forum every time. I can’t get the help I need in a timely fashion but I can’t help others out either if I don’t keep hitting that search button individually for each school/topic. To me this was the central part of CC - communication - the easier you make it the more helpful it is. So we went from a higher quality platform to one that is lower, IMO anyway. I’m sad. :((

The problem is, we used to be able to bookmark sub-forums and now we can’t, and it takes too long to hunt around and see if something new has been posted in them. It sucks and I basically have stopped posting in those forums that are not listed on the left-hand “popular forums” list. Which is a lot of forums, mostly college forums.

The moderators have NO ability to make changes, but we get updates from the administrators. They have a long list of changes/fixes that need to be made. A lot of them have to be done by the vendor. They ARE listening to users and moderators, but it’s a slow process. I’m having to be patient, too!

Glad to hear it. I think being able to bookmark a forum is the most-often asked for feature so I hope it’s top of the list. I’ve already changed the layout/colors/spacing with a browser add-on, so that’s all good for me.

Anyone know why some forums have the flames next to them? Obviously it has nothing to do with the # of posts because there are other ones which have more without the flames.

And thanks for some light mainelonghorn. I think most of us realize that moderators don’t have any control to do any changes whatsoever but a bit of update once in a while would be nice so thank you for your input.

I sometimes check the latest posts but it is tedious and so I rarely look at anything at all that I have not bookmarked.

Hi ML, thanks for jumping in. Before all of this, I used “mod” and “admin” interchangeably. I now understand the difference and I should have been more clear that my frustration isn’t directed at you moderator types.

Do you know why they’re being so opaque? Surely they understand that it would be easier for us to be patient if they’d communicate a little.

ML, do you (or any?) mods use their smartphones to moderate? If so, this must be very frustrating with no working smartphone app for CC. Have page views dropped since the changeover? Have mods quit?

Thanks, Mainelonghorn–I do not blame the mods on this at all and realize it is probably frustrating for you, too. As another posted stated above, I can live with the white space, etc. The big issue to me is that the main reason I come to college confidential (for easy exchange of information) no longer exists. I just can’t wrap my head around the “it takes time/waiting on the vendor” response. I could get a hole dug, concrete poured and have a house built in the amount of time this is taking–I am not kidding. It is just too bad, because I really felt the cc boards were such a valuable tool, but find myself increasingly less interested in checking here anymore.

Did I miss something? There HAD been a working smartphone app. Did we lose it with the new format?

MaineLonghorn rocks and her dog is pretty cute, too, though my kitty challenges her pup for cuteness. Just sayin’…
