The videos display really, really big on a computer when you insert a youtube link.
I’m young, I can adapt to anything. Whether that means I’ll be using it in the future is another matter entirely.
I would cut you some slack if it legitimately seemed like you were doing these things for the betterment of the community, but you don’t. Maybe if you laid out the rationale for the gross color changes, the waste of space, the push towards social media integration, and the basic just doing away with everything the community liked, I’d cut some slack.
But no, this blindsided us and I’ve already admitted I’m bitter.
I’ll stop whining now. I promise :). I’m sure if I wasn’t a sick and emotional hot mess, I’d be less bitter. But I’m not so Imma just stay grumpy.
Some of these changes make more sense, romani, if you remember that the purpose of these forums is no longer to primarily to facilitate conversation and promote the dissemination of information, it is to generate page views, display more ads, and create more profit. The actual information flow is secondary.
For example - facebook links on every post - an attempt to tie into the facebook ecosystem and generate views back into the site.
For example - only being able to see 15 posts on a page - generates more page views.
For example - no longer seeing the post content in the emails - forces me to go to the forum, which generates a page view.
For example - having options to minimize the number of times you have to click to see what you want reduces page views, so making more cumbersome generates extra page views.
I don’t know, maybe I am too cynical.
They switched forum software from vBulletin (I think) to Vanilla Forums, which is a commercial product. Hopefully it is sufficiently customizable that some of the problems can be addressed. And hopefully there is a desire to fix some of the issues.
At least the facebook link seems to be their own link instead of facebook’s embedded code that tracks you even when you don’t click on it.
This new format is a hot mess. YUCK! Bring back the old format.
This isn’t just a “format change”, they completely changed the underlying forum software to use a different product. There is no going back… we can only hope they can make it better.
Ah yes, how could I have forgotten. It all makes perfect sense given that.
I came back on here because the mobile format is just not usable. Most of the threads I’m on are hundreds of pages long and since I’m not signed in on my phone, I go back to the first page every single time.
When using emoticons they display as letters instead. Sometimes backwards letters??? Do I have to make some adjustment to my computer? I have a macbook.
:)>- :)) Just checkin in… people hate change. I’m a people, therefore I hate change too. You either get over it or you don’t. You’re welcome.
Please bring back the ability to view other posts by a poster.
You can still do that. Click on the person’s profile and click on replies.
So yea one day later, I’m totally ok with many of the changes. But the color scheme is honestly the biggest offender. It does appear they adjusted it slightly since yesterday. It doesn’t seem too blindly today…
I can live with everything else but these are my three big ones:
-Color Scheme- it hurts.
-Lack of a “My post” feature that shows whether or not there are new posts in the threads you’ve posted in
-Lack of a “last page” button on the mobile site makes it pretty much unusable
Whatever on everything else, I’d just like the site to be USABLE
Mets…when I click on the avatar, I don’t get to the profile at all. And I don’t see a reply button. Can you give me more info?
Well…there is a cancel button now when you hit the edit function…but it does NOT cancel the post! What food is that?
Mets…yes, I get a list of ALL the posts but what a friggin unorganized MESS. The old way was much easier to figure out! It was by thread.
For those who don’t know how to search on a mobile device:
The way to do it is to scroll up to the top of the page and hit the magnifying glass at the top right. Then, in the bar that says “search,” (this is from the new menu) click the dropdown menu next to the magnifying glass. That brings you to advanced search, which allows you to search by author. If you type in the name of a poster (e.g. metsfanAJM), all of his or her recent posts should show up.
@thumper1: I agree, it was much easier to search in the old format. I don’t like how I have to click “more comments” to see more posts instead of clicking a page number. Does it only go back to the 200 most recent posts, or does it goes through all posts?
THIS IS A FRICKING MESS!!!
I HATE THE NEW FORUM.
I’m a part of at least 5 forums including this one and I must say, after this change, this is THE WORST forum I have EVER experienced in terms of ease of use, and format.
Whose ill conceived idea was this!?!?!?
I don’t know why but I really don’t like the new look. I’m usually on CC on and off throughout the day but this is my first time on today and I only came on to post this.
I don’t know why people are making such a fuss about the new theme. I personally love it.
@thumper1 you click on a user then click on “Replies” on the far left, that shows you their previous posts. For example, the poster above me: <a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/profile/comments/100201243/PKMGSoledad”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/profile/comments/100201243/PKMGSoledad</a>
I’m here to report that Whitman College’s forum is totally non-functional. The newest thread posted is 2010 and one that I know was started on January 24th, 2014 is nowhere to be found. I found it by doing a search for mentions of Whitman, it’s not shown in the forum. This is very irksome!
