There are NO stunts.

Tisch is a SUBSTANCIAL TUITION for a BFA, the highest in the country, in fact. Need we quibble about the percentage of increase? The threshold of $50,000.00 is a psychological stunner for parents. It makes it difficult for coaches to interest families in considering NYU when it might be a good fit." If you are saying it was $47,920, what is a couple more thousand to someone who can pay that?

Sissy, I am not sure whose post you are responding to. I see you mentioned the $47,920 figure and I was the one who posted that that was THIS year's total for tuition/room/board/books/personal expenses. I am NOT saying "what is a couple thousand more?" I posted ONLY to clarify that when comparing schools and their fees, it is important to say what those fees represent. You called it "tuition" and the tuition itself is NOT the figure you mentioned. That figure, I presume, is like the figure I gave for THIS year which included all the fees I just outlined. If comparing to another school, one must compare apples to apples so not put $50K that includes everything next to another school where the cost given may be just tuition or as many often do which is to give tuition/room/board. For instance, when I think of a college's fees, I think of tutiion/room/board because the financial aid and the bills I am responsible for have THOSE fees. Books and personal expenses are variable and not on the college bill itself. For me, I thought of NYU costing $45,200 this past year because I would have to pay for books or personal expenses no matter where my child attended. I do not know what the total is for JUST room/board/tution for next year as you did not provide that but I think added in personal expenses and books. So, I was clarifying what that total may represent and also mentioned that it is very costly.

You also posted that Mary Anna was right that NYU has a SUBSTANTIAL tuition increase. Both of you used the term "substantial" to refer to the increase, NOT the total cost, which most would agree is very expensive. The responses are to those statements, not regarding that it is an expensive school. If total costs are $2000 more than last year and if they represent a 4% increase as AlwaysAMom posted, that is not just an increase in tuition itself (as you don't give the break down of each fee from last year and then for this year) but is a 4% increase overall in fees, which is common at colleges. Even in my little town the school budget went up that much for next year. The word "substantial" is not often used for a 4% increase in educational costs. Yes, $2000 is a lot of money. You also seem to be presuming that those who responded with some facts would have no trouble paying the $2000 increase in the total fees. That is presumptuous, in my view. I can only speak for myself. My child is on substantial financial aid....both scholarships and loans and parent PLUS loans. I can't afford increases but I also would expect a school's budget to increase some yearly. It doesn't shock me but it doesn't mean I can pay it. I will just have to borrow more. So, I am FULLY aware of the difficulty in funding an education that is costly. Folks need to consider cost and if this is a school to which they feel they want their child to apply considering the costs and how they might be able to fund it, take on debt, or hope for a good aid package if they can demonstrate need. All things to consider. It doesn't mean others have more money or can afford it but merely have made decisions of what they will do and how they will do it. These are decisions that all families must make. We do what we can and our children will be fine if this is not a school that is affordable or a parent cannot extend themselves finanicially to make it possible. There are plenty of schools out there and many families have limitations financially. Some also do not wish to take out parent loans, some cannot, etc. All situations differ and are individual. Kids will be fine no matter what and learn to live with whatever their parents decide they can and cannot do. The general costs for this school are no secret at the time of application. The 4% increase (which has yet to even be set by NYU) is within the reasonable realm of possibiities with colleges, or in other words, one would expect the tuition/room/board to not remain stable all four years.

Considering finances makes this process all the more difficult. My s also considered a BA at a college using the Profile to determine aid. Believe it or not, it turned out to be more than a few thousand more than NYU, once aid was taken into account. If you do decide on NYU, consider signing up for the tuition stabilization program. You pay more up front, but it freezes tuition costs for the 4 years.

Jasmom, actually for my D, NYU costs less than some of her other options. Her other schools gave merit aid/scholarships and need based aid too but NYU's was the best scholarship of them all so it truly costs less than some of her other options, though her decision of where to attend was not based on that fact.

Susan, the sets and costumes of Starmites were AMAZING, lol! Seriously, it was a great show! Wish you had been able to see it. Ask your d about hers and my d's "errand" they had to run at the drug store sometime.... ;)

RossJi....thanks for the heads up. I'll ask her when I ever get more than a call on the run as she is walking and getting on the subway or something! Which day did you see it? My 19 year old daughter was in NYC on Saturday and went to the matinee that our girls were crewing. I know my CAP kid said it was very good and then my older one also said the talent was very good too. Now I am curious about the errand. Glad our girls worked together and that nothing fell apart in the show....or did it? LOL I think my D put in like 80 hours of crew in 10 days and was pretty sick for half that time and I am very glad this grueling week is over. You'll have to let me know which dorm your D got. My D is happy with hers. This evening she was at her room pick within the dorm, but haven't heard that part yet. She is in Carlyle Court in Union Square for next year.

Hmm... Carlyle sounds familiar. I think my d is going to be there, too! My bad - I can never keep track. I know it's apt. style. That's about it.

In reply to your post #118, here is the link you asked for:

I guess the word "substantial" is subjective. 4% sounds like a small amount. However, you have to ask 4% of what? Because that base amount is what actually determines the real amount of money and that is what we're really talking about here.....real money, not percentages. To many of the colleges discussed on here where the total cost is around $28,000, a 4% increase might be small. But, 4% of $34,000 could be considered substantial. The bottom line is simply that NYU's total costs are over $50,000. That's a substantial amount in anyone's book. And I know they give these huge scholarships and awards, but that's not comparing apples to apples. You have to just look at and compare costs.

I haven't heard anything from NYU yet..nada

Does CAP 21 have a senior showcase??

CAP 21 is a three year studio program.

And as soon as I stop posting immature comments on here MTMover decided to take over for me. Personal blows! Very productive, hats off to you!

Ok... so what does that mean? Senior showcase or not?

I don't want to say that they dont, but I know that CAP is a studio affiliated with the Drama program. Drama may have a showcase, but I can't answer yea or nay.

http://www.cap21.org/ <-Studio Site

http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/page/home.html <--Drama Site

I don't believe they have a showcase, however the school's faculty is comprised of working professionals and educator's working together. For instance one of Stuart Howard's Casting Associates works at the school. So the professional connections at the school are abundant.

As for showcase, check the websites, and that should answer your question. Also if you e-mail an inquiry they are great about responding!

But I will say this....if you end up there and even if they don't have a showcase (again, i'm not sure either way), do summer stock in the summer, start going to auditions and interviewing with agents junior/senior year! A friend's older brother is in the CAP program and he's been going to auditions and interviewing with agents (NYU helped him gain awareness of these opportunities) and he might be leaving school for a year to do the national tour of hairspray! He has also been called back for Altar Boyz and Hello Dolly at the Paper Mill Playhouse. So it's all about getting yourself out there. All a senior showcase does is compile all those people you'd want to call anyway into a theater to watch. If that doesn't go well, then you're back on your own again anyway! So, while a showcase is helpful (I'm glad to be going to a school that has one, but it really wasn't something i looked at with priority when comparing programs) it's all about networking, getting to know people, going to auditions, getting yourself out there and showing the right people how talented you are! So go to where you feel you will grow as a performer, as a person, and as a future professional and that will be the right path for you. Good luck!

Thanks!

Another question, if anyone knows (I emailed Tisch about this, but I'm impatient. lol)... It looks like CAP doesn't put on very many productions with Tisch students. Did I just read it wrong? What kind of performance opportunities are there at NYU? Is it true that anyone, even non-NYU/Tisch students, can audition for CAP productions?

OHHH now you're talkin! NYU is STUFFED FULL with Performance Opportunities! There are a few drama shows, but honestly the shows that receive the most hype (and the ones that I've found to be better) are the GAP shows, which are in abundance. GAP shows are totally student done - produced, directed, designed, everything! And are known to be truly phenomenal. They did a production of Bat Boy (with a friend's older brother as Bat Boy!) which received incredible reviews, and it was a pity it could not be extended, because tickets sold out before they could release the advertising and press materials! There was some new material (provided by the composing team...who worked with the production) used as well. That's the ultimate, students who are passionate about all aspects of theatre working together!

Thanks again! hehe

I hear people refer to CAP as a "chorus member factory." Do you think that reputation is true from what you have seen?
