Chance a junior? Please and thank you.

Applying for 2010 admissions. I had absolutely no interest in Tulane. They'd send me mail at least once a week for months, and I hardly paid it any attention. I'm a typical, arrogant New Yorker, and I've always wanted to stay in my city. I went to New Orleans on vacation last week and was convinced by a relative to just pay Tulane a visit. Well, I absolutely fell in love with the city of New Orleans and the campus. I can really see myself there, and I'm absoluely considering it.

You’re in, with decent FA. Congrats. (But what’s up with that GPA? NHS as a Junior with a weighted 3.6?)

Agree with NewHope, you should be in no problem with those great SAT’s and EC’s. GPA is fine, it just looks low compared to your other stats, but it won’t hold you back from getting in at all. Definitely go Early Admission. It is non-binding, and I think they will make you a nice scholarship offer. Besides, as much as you fell in love with the city and the school, you are clearly highly intelligent.

Don’t forget to apply for the Dean’s Honor Scholarship also, which is a separate application, as is the Community Service Scholarship, I think it is called. They are tough to get, very competitive so don’t be disappointed if you don’t get one, but you have a decent shot I think.

Thanks! As for the GPA… you need a 3.3 weighted to get into NHS at my school (or an 85 on a 100 pt. scale) and not much service. It’s pretty lax. A 3.6 is equal to a 92 or so in my neck of the woods, so I was in without a problem. It’s obviously not as high as it should be, but I’ve had some health issues, which I’ll be sure to mention (if necessary… which I presume it is?) I’ll definitely look into applying for those scholarships.

Any more advice? I need all the help I can get!

You should be fine. And please don’t get us wrong, 3.6 is nothing to sneeze at! But I would say, if you are seeing your grades improving last semester, this semester, whenever you were not ill, then I would point that out, but not dwell on it. And if that is the case make sure your counselor puts it in her recommendation. If your grades are fairly steady from semester to semester, then just let it go. They are fine, anyway. Better than mine were when I was in HS!! And yet, Tulane let me in. How silly of them.
