Newhouse School of Communications... worth the debt?

I was reading a similar discussion to this about whether or not Newhouse was worth it, but I wanted to explain my personal situation and hopefully get some opinions ASAP (I have to decide by May 1st).

A few years ago, I decided that I wanted to major in Communications, and when I saw Newhouse for the first time, I fell in LOVE. It has the most wonderful program, with the most elite faculty, and the perfect hands-on style curriculum. It also has one of the highest employment rates out of ALL programs in America! It is exactly what I want in a program. Of course, the program is extremely competitive, only accepting 300 or so students out of over 4,000 applicants. It was a reach for me and I was shocked and overjoyed when I got the acceptance letter!

Now here's the problem... they did not give me a very good financial package. It will still be over 40k a year for me to go and my parents are not willing to spend that, so the financial burden would be on me. We've tried calling and explaining our situation to the office of financial aid, but they do not seem like they are going to budge.

Meanwhile, I have two other schools on my list as well. I was accepted to the University of Michigan and my state school, Rutgers University. Rutgers gave me an amazing price, which would leave me with no debt after college. University of Michigan gave me a pretty decent package as well, better than Syracuse's, but still leaving me with some debt. I know University of Michigan is a very highly ranked school, and I was surprised to get in with such a good financial package. However, when I saw the school, I just didn't fall in love with it. They have a fine Communications major, with decent faculty, but all of the classes are like huge lecture halls, which I am not very into. I hated Rutgers when I saw it, and I really do not want to go there. Still, my dad is pushing for Rutgers, claiming where I go to college will have no effect on my career and future in the long run. I still can't let go of the love I immediately had for Newhouse, and I cannot stand the idea of passing this opportunity up.

Basically, I am asking if Newhouse is worth all of the debt. The program is phenomenal, and it has amazing connections to the real world, but is it worth passing up better financial packages from Rutgers or University of Michigan? I am looking for honest and realistic opinions. Thanks!

No undergraduate degree is worth $160,000 in debt.

Rutgers sounds like a good option. Does New house have a graduate program?

Yes it does… thanks for your opinion

Just out of curiosity, if you dont mind me asking, what did your GPA and SAT score look like? I am hoping I get accepted into Newhouse, so I just wanted to compare:)

The weighted GPA of the Fall 2014 class at Newhouse is 3.97. I don’t know the average SAT for the school but assume it’s in the Syracuse upper 25% range. If you can pull a high SAT or ACT score they’ll want you, all the other factors will determine just how much they want you.
