Newsweek's "Top" High schools- observation

“No AP, no IB” - not an indication of anything. Some private HS’s restrict APs and actually have very few to offer. Some teachers at these schools just do not believe in calling the class “AP”, while still teaching it at the higher levels than AP’s are taught at the other schools. Name it whatever, when they get to college, it becomes obvious who knows and who is lacking in background, and in many cases it does not align with having AP in the subject or not.

Among the 3 main high schools in town, the one that more parents/students trying to avoid made it within 200 while the other 2 are off the list. Go figure.

@MiamiDAP I agree. My son’s school does not offer AP or IB… they don’t believe in them period. It’s a project based school and the work they do is pretty amazing. Relationships with NASA, Google, etc. Not only do they send almost all their students to 4-year colleges, the elite school line up to give recruitment presentations there every year. My eldest child’s final high school didn’t offer AP’s either. It was duel enrollment so they were getting a real college experience and credit.

There are many paths to a great education. I suppose that is why these lists bug me.

Ha Ha. Our school scored about a 17 in college readiness. I wonder how far below the bottom of the list that puts it?

I’m glad to see our Chicago selective-enrollment schools being recognized for their success in light of the high poverty rate of their populations. These kids get outstanding preparation.

Very strange list. Among Northern CA schools, the 2 Palo Alto schools (Gunn and Palo Alto High) are usually on these lists. Not on this one, though. I wonder what in Newsweek’s criteria disqualified them this year, as last year they were there.

^^ thats one of the reasons I said the list was bogus!

I’m totally surprised that the kids’ old school made it at 134. North Allegheny is generally considered one of the top in the Greater Pittsburgh area and it got listed a couple of positions higher, but others such as Upper St Clair, Mt. Lebanon, Fox Chapel, etc which were not mentioned are usually always rated significantly better than ours.
