next year's tuition

Thank you for pointing out the article, Winterset. I found this interesting:

I noticed on CNN tonight that students are marching in the streets across the US of A protesting the sharp rise in college tuition.

About time.

Care to share?

Avon Old Farms
2009-2010 $42900
2010-2011 $44850

Thanks Scontland. That’s a 4.5% increase. The newly admitted families: you already know the new tution rate. It’s included with your admission offer. Please come in and share.

Middlesex school:
New Tuition rates

  • Boarding students: $46,090
  • Day students: $36,870
I do not know last year’s tuition but it said on the letter that it was a 4% increase

The current tuition is still on Middlesex website: $44,320 | $35,450 Tuition for boarding and day students, respectively. Yes, that’s a 4% increase.

Neato, you have several schools’ offer at hand. Can you post their tuition rates for 2010?

Exeter 2010-11
Boarding $39,890 / Day $30,820

I think Grotons is 48,000 Boarding but I wouldn’t stake my life on it and I can’t find the papers right this second.

That’s very high, but this is “all inclusive” for Groton right? Does it include books and supplies as well as school fees? If so then on top of this, all you need is travel cost and spending money. Blue, you mentioned you got over FA equal to over half of the $48000 from Groton?

Kent - 45,300 + required tablet computer: 1843 + other fees: 1380 =

$49,023 (more than Groton)

Add to that 725 for laundry w/ dry cleaning (It’s a coat and tie school.) 800 for books and 1600 for the insurance if, like most, you have a managed care plan that makes out of area coverage practically non-existant and you’re at a grand total of:

$52,148

That’s the only one I had handy. Not only is the tuition more expensive than at the Phillipses, the fees are more. For instance, the health supplemental at Exeter is 700. It’s twice that at the other schools. Of course, the tablet PC would only need to be purchased the first year, but I’d assume that tuition would increase enough within a year to significantly close the gap greated.

Base tuition should be on all school’s websites by now. It’s the required fees that tend to add up so quickly.

Perhaps this 8000 “discount” that Exeter and Andover shares is ONE of the reasons they have so many applications and thus, such high selectivity?

EDIT: Though I don’t have Blair and M’burg convenient, I seem to remember them being just maybe 1 or 2K less than Kent, but still considerably more than Phillipses when all the required fees were added. Even though those two don’t have a required laptop purchase, we would still need to buy one - bet your boots it wouldn’t cost 1800 though!

On top of that 48k for Groton there’s an estimated 2,100 for ‘other expense’ eg. computer, laundry ect.

NMH

Boarding $45,100;
fees: laundry, tech, health center, health insurance $1,790
tuition refund insurance $ 1,083
Health insurance $1,200
Book $800

Ouch. Several schools’ total cost (including travel and spending money) is approaching (or even over) $50K a year. If you have to spend some for summer activities, it would be even more…

Tuition refund plans seem to vary from school to school. At my son’s school you are required to purchase the plan if you cannot pay in full by August 1st. I assume that is fairly common procedure. What seems to vary is the percentage charge based on tuition. His school charges 4.4% of the net tuition and fee.

Salisbury School
Tuition $45,700
General fee/technology fee $1100
Tuition Refund plan $2,037

Looking at Alexz825Mom’s post NMH charges $1083 for their Tuition refund plan. That is a $1000 difference between these 2 schools.

I am wondering what other schools charge for this plan and why there is such a difference.

The company insuring has higher premiums for some schools depending on past history of kids dropping out, getting kicked out, etc.

2.5% of tuition seems a common charge for tuition insurance. Some schools charge higher. Could it be the school’s way to discourge families dropping out in the middle of the year? In other words, they’d rather you not buy the insurance.

There seems to be some variation. Blair’s tuition refund plan is $600 a year, and it is not required if all the tuition is paid in August. [Blair Academy - Admission](http://www.blair.edu/Admissions/ad_fin_info_withdrawal.shtm) However, the plan does not cover 100% of tuition. For example, someone who withdraws Sept. 9th would receive back 70% of the tuition.

The laundry service is a nice plus but not necessary for schools with a casual dress code. Those parents who pick up by car are usually provided hampers of dirty laundry with or without the service.

Blair doesn’t have an activities fee so standard weekend activities are included. I think charges are added for activities like a play in NYC, amusement park, airport shuttle, etc. Preseason at a distant location is additional. Travel abroad is additional. I think fa students are billed differently, but I’m not sure.

I don’t think any of them cover 100%. It’d be prorated and then refunded at a certain percentage. Are you sure it’s $600 if you pay full tuition? That’s below 1.5% of tuition.
