NHSI (National High School Institute) at Northwestern University

hey everybody.

I was just wondering:

okay so my grades are, let's face it, not perfect. i know that NHSI is competitive to get into, and northwestern is really my first choice for college for film. I was just wondering if with grades like mine (B's and B+'s, and A's) i could get into NHSI. and if i do get into NHSI, would it heighten my chances of getting into Northwestern?

thank you in advance

how prestigious is this program

Maybe I have no idea, but I never thought this program was too competetive (~75% acceptance I thought).

apply...the worst that can happen is they reject you

in terms of prestige/competition
it is easier to get into Northwestern as an NHSI journalism kid than it is to get into NHSI in the first place

i did the journalism cherubs program this summer...it was life changing
(cherubs is the unofficial mascot-dont worry there is nothing religious about it)

arox, the program is quite prostigious in the strands that it offers: film, theater, journalism, debate, speech, and music. and it's put on by northwestern as well.

and JBou, tell me if I understand you correctly. you're saying that if i get accepted to NHSI for Theater, then it will make my chances significantly higher for admission to the university?

oh and raiderade, do you kno where you found out that 75% statistic?

yes, this is true. Unlike many of the "summer college" programs at Ivy League universities, the NHSI program does in fact give you a leg up in admissions. I think I even recall admissions officers saying this explicitly. IN addition, i have several senior friends who went to this program for journalism and there was not a single person who did NOT get into Northwestern.

Though keep in mind, these kids also had great grades and decent test scores so that is still important. but yes, to answer your question, there is no doubt that attending the program gives you a better chance at admission at NU as opposed to one who did not.

So, if NU is your top choice I would highly encourage you to attend this program.

I have no clue where I got that statistic, I really have no idea, I just remember hearing about it.

hmm. well thank you, raiderade. I'm feeling a lot better about getting into it (knock on wood).

and thank you, hardworkerl. that's extremely reassuring.

i want to clarify this so, the selection for NHSI IS competitive and it will enhance my college application. Does this apply to let's say the musical theatre division? or only the journalism one.

also can i apply to both divisions? for example journlaism AND theatre?

I've noticed that the application for journalism writes that they want students that have a "background, special interest and/or interest in journalism." I assumed that all members would have to be currently enrolled in a high school journalism, but I am not, though my extracurriculars are all leaning toward writing and the humanities. My question is, as a student not enrolled in Journalism, will I have a chance at attending this program?

I'd apply but the gpa requirement is like 3.5 or something, right? How firm on that are they?

I am pretty sure that NU is pretty adamant about the GPA requirement (I've gone to NHSI twice now) but I think I heard someone say once that if you can justify a lower GPA, you should still apply and you can have a good shot at getting in.

NHSI programs are REALLY well-run and I really recommend them. If anyone has questions, feel free to PM!

Haha, oh wow. That just ruined it for me.

I would say that you should definitely apply. I applied to the Speech Program for LD thinking i wouldn’t get in. After a while i had figured that i hadn’t gotten in, but the next day i got my acceptance packet. You should really apply. The worst that can happen is that your out the application fee
