Hi! This is my first thread! I'm extremely interested in applying to Northwestern's National High School Institute journalism program (aka. "cherubs"). I'm curious about HOW competitive it actually is, and how hard is it to get into the program? Also, what are my chances of getting in w/ the following info?
I'm a pretty good student, but nowhere near stellar. I have a 3.78 gpa, but I got good grades this past semester (all As), take some AP/AC classes, etc. As for journalistic experience, am on my first year on the newspaper, recently became new feature editor, and am a reporter/writer for the Ann Arbor Youth Senate board. I also attended a journalism camp last summer at Michigan State, and won the MIPA award for "excellence in feature writing". for the ACT, i took it for the 1st time last month and I got a 27 on it, which is pretty bad, but oh well. I am also pretty sure that my newspaper adviser will write a good rec 4 me
Any advice, help, info, etc.? Thank you, and I sure appreciate anything!!! ^^

jbabe24 - It will probabaly be a lot of fun, and a great opportunity, and Northwestern is right on the lake, with beaches at both North and South campus, so Good Times! I think you will get in to the Summer program, - you’ve got tons of experience - and although my D was not in Journalism, she DID graduate from Northwestern this past year. FYI - She only got a 27 on her ACT, BUT when she took the SAT also, she scored the equivalent of an ACT 32, so I would look at that if I were you. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your reply newnudad!! your advice/info is definitely reassuring. And yes, it seems like an awesome opportunity. although i dont know anybody who has ever attended. An congrats to your daughter! NU is a tough school from what Ive heard
I’m sorry, I may sound kinda desperate (this is my 2nd time checking back on the post), but does anybody else know the acceptance rate/how hard it is to get in, esp. w/ what little credentials i have? I think the deadline is nearing soon and I haven’t started the app yet.
*For clarification, im just wondering if I’ll get accepted into the summer program, not rlly Northwestern itself.
As for my ACT, would it do any good to explain the circumstances? (no prep/study whatsoever, only 5 hours of sleep the night b4 b/c of a varsity indoor track meet that lasted until 1 a.m., no time 2 eat breakfast, etc.) I plan to take the ACT again through my school in a Michigan state test beginning of March, but scores will most likely be ready after the deadline. will the program still accept/consider the new scores, esp. if i do much better? Should I contact them? Any advice would be great, thanks. And again, sorry for my long posts and pestering behavior

okayyy…, so its been a long time since i’ve been on and so let me start over. Basically, can anybody just tell me how competitive this program is, specifically the journalism division? any info would be so appreciated.
