D is going to Pace's Summer Scholars program for MT in July. My DH and I are going with her to NYC a few days in advance. This will be HIS first trip; D and I have been twice before on school trips. I'm trying to book tickets for shows before the Tony Awards. D is a dancer and so we like musicals with dancing. We are looking at Newsies and Nice Work. I have discount codes for both.....

Any thoughts, recommendations, reviews???

We'll also go to the TKTS booth looking for discounts on others while we are there.

Well I only saw Newsies and the dancing was amazing! If there’s any chance you can see Once too then go for it!! It was a beautiful show!! My fave this season so far!! Not a dance show though.

I haven’t seen either, but I have seen some clips and video of Newsies and the dancing looks just incredible! Perhaps you could see if you can find some clips of both on line, and see which piques your interest more?

Also, if you have a smartphone, you might want to consider downloading the TKTS app. When I am thinking about going to a show, I used it daily to look and see what’s on the board - it can give you a good idea of how frequently the shows you are interested show up there, and what the discounts are like.

I can’t compare the two as I only saw Newsies and not Nice Work. But Newsies was wonderful. My kids were infatuated with that movie when they were young. I got to see the show on Broadway with my MT daughter recently (and only wish my other D was with us as she would have loved it). The dancing is great. The acting is wonderful. Such good music. The set was really neat. The story is a good one. If your D likes a show with lots of dance, this surely fits the bill. Lots of young people in it!

(I have not gotten to see Once but my daughter raved about it as have others but that is not a dance show as someone else mentioned)

I heard that Once was great, too. But with limited dollars and our interest in dance, gotta go with a dance show.

MTmama2013: Good point about TKTS. Used that app last time we were there. Checking it Newsies is rarely discounted, while Nice Work has been. So I’ll take a chance and buy Newsies now with discount codes, and maybe just pick up tix to Nice Work while there. Thanks for that great tip!!!

Meanwhile, back I go to planning our itinerary! Yay me!!

Absolutely agree. DW and I were in line @ the South Street Seaport TKTS location (our preferred TKTS location vs Times Square; haven’t visited the Brooklyn location yet) when we heard about the app from one of the attendents. Downloaded it then and there, and were on our way quickly with our order, once we were at the window. Through the app, you can see the offerings @ TS, SSS and Bklyn locations. Very useful if there’s a particular performance that you want to see.

We saw Nice Work and enjoyed it, although it didn’t blow us away. The songs (by Gershwin) are superb. Matthew Broderick is very good, although he has a few miles on him, so his dancing is not spectacular. It’s kind of old-fashioned. But I’d say this–Newsies is “product.”

One tip: we really like TKTS, and especially like the lesser-known, much shorter line for plays (vs. the super-long line for musicals). If they have half-price tickets for the Best Man (assuming it’s still playing), I strongly recommend it. You won’t have too many more chances to see James Earl Jones and Angela Lansbury. One Man, Two Guv’nors is also very entertaining–although also not a musical (although there is music).

If you don’t mind seeing “last year’s” show, I heard Anything Goes is great, and the dancing is better than in Nice Work.

Also, if you’re eligible to join TDF.org, you can get $40 seats to Anything Goes, and Memphis is often on there too. Have you seen that? Wonderful dancing.

Just saw Newsies on Thurs. The dancing (and singing)
is incredible. My D said she would love to see it again. It is however expensive because you can’t find discount tickets for it. Haven’t seen Nice Work. Enjoy your trip!

We saw Nice Work a few weeks ago and D saw Newsies the same trip (like soozietvt’s D our was a major childhood Newsies fan). Nice Work is much like Crazy For You though with (in my opinion) a better book. Matthew Broderick and Kelli O’Hara are great but the show didn’t stick with me at all.

If I had to choose, based on D’s impressions, I’d go for Newsies though I assume much of the dancing is boys.

We also really enjoyed Peter and the Starcatcher, but it’s not a dancing show. ;-D

I did not enjoy Nice Work. The dance numbers seemed out of place and too lengthy, kind of like the entire show.

Once is also a dance show, but not in a traditional sense. It’s the same choreographer who did American Idiot, Steven Hoggett, who is very into character-inspired movement. It’s not your run-of-the-mill Broadway dancing, but it’s more than just blocking.
