so im an incoming senior and planning on majoring in chem...and im a girl. How much will being a female in a male dominated major help me?

I'm applying to all the upper-tier SUNYs btw, Binghamton, Stony Brook, Albany etc... and my only semi-reach is Binghamton.

andd for stony brook, I'm applying to the WISE(Women in Science and Engineering) program.

it will help less than it would in physics or some engineering disciplines, but more than it would in biology or the bio related engineering fields >_>

uh, probably help a good bit, depends on how many other females apply to the particular school for chemistry and whether the particular school cares about trying to balance out the ratio, which most do.

Well, in Stony Brook, for that program, I imagine it won't help at all, seeing as all of the people applying are, by definition, women in science and engineering :-P.

Generally though, this is the type of thing you can't really control. If you're really interested in chemistry, show your passion on your application, and whatever people think about you being female in a male-dominated profession is just icing on the cake. But whether it helps or not, you can't really control that, and nobody knows for sure.... what can really help though, is showing your interest strongly and presenting yourself well! Good luck.

^Actually the WISE program admissions and admissions to Stony Brook are two separate entities.
SUNY SB came down to one of my last 5 schools I had to decide between (and I was in at WISE with full tuition/room&board/fees scholarship... it was hard to turn down).

I wouldn't be concerned about whether or not it will help you - just try and make your application as strong as possible.
