Nickeled and Dimed by the Business Office

Hello prep school parents- is anyone else getting annoyed by their student's bookstore bill? It seems that when the tuition at these schools hovers around 40 grand they could cover such items as mandatory field trips and xeroxed "research paper guides." List your dubious items here so I can feel better LOL.

I'll have to think back....I agree that anything mandatory should be included in the tuition and other annual fees. FWIW--there are schools that do NOT keep charging fees, but you need to ask on the front end before you send your kid off!

Wall Street Journal subscription
AP testing fees
graphing calculator (school did rent them for $10/term, but why not just provide them?)

I'm sending my child back after vacation with Costco boxes of greeting cards, highlighters, sticky notes and index cards to avoid seeing those on the bill anymore ;-)

Can you put a stop on the bookstore charge and put money in an allowance account instead?

We always had a weekly allowance disbursed from a student account that we put money into. Disbursements other than the weekly cash allowance required a dorm proctor's approval.
