What is the area surrounding GaTech like? Is it safe? On the campus do you feel safe walking around at night? Thanks in advance for the answers!

I hear alot to not go under the 3rd street tunnel at night. Travel with friends on North Avenue...the campus is safe, you feel fine walking around it at night

bump, anyone?

The campus is safe, and so are the surroundings. Though it is always better to move in a group. If you're in a group of 3+ ppl, its safe. Else, you just might see some bums sitting around, which freaks me out...

It's pretty much in downtown Atlanta, which should tell you somtehing. The interior of campus is probably okay although no place is totally "secure" unless it's basically on lockdown.

The park across from the Coca Cola headquarters just to the south of campus at North Avenue and Luckie seems to be a major hangout for homeless people. I walked by there alone at dusk during FASET (heading back to Holiday Inn Express) and got a little freaked out, but nothing happened - no one even said a word. My sons and I have walked at night along North Avenue from the MARTA station with luggage - we stayed alert - again, nothing happened. I feel a little uncomfortable in those situations as a suburban Mom, but in general using common sense and not putting yourself in a foolish situation (alone after dark along edges of campus especially) will go a long way towards staying safe.

Thats pretty much how it works...the homeless people are harmless here though. North Ave is def. not a shadey place (I know a lot of people say it is)...but I'm from a city, and the parts around GT aren't that bad.

Eh, the edges of campus are safe too...I mean the only place where I would be skeptical is the 3rd street tunnel, but they lock that at 12am. Again, I've been there at night and its no biggie. Never living in a city, the surrounding areas can intimidate you but its not as bad as you think. Now taking the MARTA into College Park may be a little risky, lol.

FerstAmendment -

I'm sure you are right. While being in the heart of the city puts me a little outside my comfort zone, I have never seen anything the least bit threatening near GT's campus. People need to stay alert no matter where they are (city, suburbs, country) for potential threats and be ready to avoid them or deal with them.
