Crime around campus; please be careful

This is just an FYI. Georgia Tech has been experiencing an upswing in crime around the outskirts of the campus. While the majority of these incidents have been off official GA Tech grounds, they have occured within easy, close, walking distance to the campus and the crimes have been committed against GA Tech Students. Most of these have been armed robberies. Some students have been injured (there was a stabbing just this past week.)

I'm not sure if these cases get listed under campus crime, because they happen technically off campus (and thus the average person may not be aware of the issue if they do not live in Atlanta) , but the take home message is BE CAREFUL. Ga Tech is located in a city atmosphere and students - just like other prudent citizens - should not be out on the streets after dark, especially in the wee hours. Almost all of these crimes have occured late at night and before dawn. The last student to get robbed and stabbed told the police he was walking to the Publix to buy cocoa at 5:30AM and he took the dark alley as a short cut. How street smart is that?

Georgia State University (also downtown near GA TECH) also had a volient crime incident this past week where a student was attacked and their car stolen.

Just use some common sense and protect yourselves. Most college campuses offer security escorts to cars/dorms after dark - make use of them.

So let’s look at the case of the kid that was stabbed…

He walked 7 blocks off campus, past a strip club and a liquor store, in the middle of the night, by himself. Then, when he got to the store that everyone knows is not 24 hours, he decides to walk back by taking a “short cut” through a dark alley. Then a crazy yelling man jumps out of the bushes, and rather than running away, he talks to the guy.

A little common sense…

Atlanta has turned into a violent city in the last year or so, thanks to the police furloughs and a rise in gang violence. The GTPD do an excellent job patrolling campus, and as a result campus is very safe. But off campus they have no authority and students that chose to walk through dark alleys in the middle of the night are at the mercy of the over taxed and underfunded APD. Hopefully the new mayor can fix that - it was a central theme of his campaign.
