Night Life

How is the night life at Tulane? there was a recent article about the amount of unsolved murders in New Orleans. Has this affected university students and the night life at all..?

santabarbie - While there has been a recent uptick in crime near the campus (although there have been arrests and the patrol presence has been doubled, so hopefully this will mean a decrease back to normal), murders in the Uptown area where Tulane is located are very unusual and rare. Please do not confuse areas such as the Ninth ward and other high crime locations with the Tulane location. Like most cities, New Orleans has pockets of high crime areas that distort the overall statistics, and most of this crime is criminal on criminal (gang violence, drug related, etc.).

Over the last 5-6 years the area around Tulane has been very safe. Last semester there were some armed robberies, and right after the National Championship football game there were two rapes of out-of-town women at 3 AM. This is why the law enforcement efforts have been significantly increased.

So to answer your question, the nightlife at Tulane is awesome, of course. Tulane students are well versed in how to handle themselves to minimize risk, and Tulane offers Safe Ride options for extra safety. It would be impossible to say that this increase in crime has not had an effect on everyone, but with common sense precautions there is no reason that students cannot have every bit as good a time as before, without increased risk.

Students have only been back in the dorms since Sunday, and I can only speak for my son and his friends: The article you speak of has not slowed them down a bit! They are all very excited to be back - the first time in my son’s life he was happy that the winter break was over!

Tulane actually does a really good job of ensuring TUPD is out patrolling the bar areas on the nights there are frat parties and the obvious nights to go out.

Things haven’t really slowed down whatsoever, lol. Gotta love Tulane.
