NIH SIP Thread

Post here when you apply and if you get any offers!!

I applied last week!

Haven’t applied yet, but will soon.
Does anyone have tips or personal experience for applying?

Sent in my app except teacher reccs. I have 3 very warm responses that are just waiting on seeing my reccs. I’m just wondering how I’m going to manage housing and transportation

I’ve been hearing back from PIs saying they’ll decide closer to the deadline. Is anyone getting offers by now?

I haven’t applied yet, but I’m a junior in high school, with pretty average grades, but at a really prestigious school. Do you think I’ll have a chance of getting an internship?

I have to still send in the application, but i also have concerns over housing like where we can stay. Has anyone applied before or attended? what was the experience like

Hey guys, how did you find PIs that would mentor you? @pharaoh96 @teenagecrime‌

I know about the PI database, but it’s huge and overwhelming.

@Sydneympm I heard that if you are accepted, your mentor is extremely helpful in finding housing

@1whatsmyname1 thank you and that is good that they will help you, and yea @pharaoh96 @teenagecrime‌ how did you find your PI’s

@sydneympm @1whatsmyname1 i know this isnt what you want to hear but i literally just sent out emails that were extensive. About 4 people actually responded of 10, some more warmly, some in a more a of a “you are on my list when i decide to start looking at apps” fashion.

I just found the HiSTEP program at NIH. I’ve decided to apply to this program, as well as the main SIP. Everyone should check it out! It’s for high school students that attend to schools with a minimum of 30% free/reduced lunch students.

haha unfortunately for me i’m not from the right area

Hey, I’m currently a college freshman and have almost all of the application filled out except for the recs…
I unfortunately haven’t yet had the opportunity to get close with any STEM professors (my intro bio lecture was huge…), but I’m very close with my high school counselor (talked to her a whole lot for 3 years, plus this was at a small HS), and I’ve managed to hone a good relationship with my English seminar professor. Is there still a decent chance I could get an internship, assuming I reach out pretty extensively to PI’s? (I’ve done a 5-week paid research internship after my junior year in HS, have a good HS resume, have gotten involved in a few organizations in college, got a 3.96 first semester, and I think my personal statement is pretty well-written.)

Hey guys! Does anyone have any experience with NIH-NIEHS? I know it’s heavily research-based, but are there opportunities to go out in the field as well? And how competitive would it be considered? Thinking of applying next year, but I haven’t been able to find a lot of specifics about the program.

Thanks! And good luck with your applications

Hi guys, once you email a mentor asking for an internship, is it binding? I am also applying to other programs(some of which I would pursue over SIP) and I was wondering if it would be rude to withdraw my internship agreement if I had been selected… in other words, is it ok to back out of an internship?

@bellabill I think it would be a mistake to let go an opportunity like NIH. Basically if you get an internship at NIH you go!

Reading from many postings on this thread, I now realize how competitive these opportunities are, particularly for DS who is a freshman premed. He is talking to a PI at a hospital for a possible paid research internship and he thinks that most likely he will get the internship.
My question is, how would such an internship compare to the REU/SPUR/NIH internship?
It they are comparable, then DS should not need to spend the time and energy to apply to 10+ programs.

JUST GOT MY OFFICIAL YES AHHH SO HAPPY I DON’T NEED TO APPLY FOR ANYMORE PROGRAMS

ALSO WITH THIS IN MIND if any (preferably high school or early undergraduate) females are looking for a roommate pm me

Has anyone else been hearing from PIs or getting offers?
