I believe the application officially open. Anyone applying?
Is the program only for juniors and seniors in high school?
The program is open to high schoolers, undergrads, and grads.
I’ll be applying to this as a summer plan!
Tip: Email PIs like crazy
How many PIs are you guys emailing?
Hey guys. I did an NIH internship this summer of 2015 and I’ll be applying again. Feel free to ask me any questions.
@OneMata
Thanks, here’s some questions I have…
-
How many PIs did you email?
-
How detailed were the emails you sent?
-
How did you like the internship? What was your favorite/least favorite aspect of it?
4)Any general tips/suggestions?
Thanks!
@deeeznuts
1.) I only emailed like 4-5 PIs.
2.) However, the emails I sent out were very detailed. I looked up each PI and their research and related it to my own interests.
3.) I loved the internship! It was a fabulous experience. My favorite aspect was all the freedom you have in your workday/researching. I didn’t feel like an intern, I felt like just any other researcher. However, my least favorite aspect of the program is that it’s not too social. You have limited opportunities to socialize with other interns so it’s up to you to arrange lunches and hang out outside of the program. The other interns are really cool and smart people and I regret not socializing more with them! The college interns have a lot of great advice for us high schoolers.
4.) I would advise you to get your entire application/emailing process done over winter break. I sent my application in March and started my emailing in February so I was very, very lucky to get an offer. Most people I talked to did everything by January.
Any other fellow college students applying? Are our chances higher? I applied for this program in HS and did not have any luck; however, I did not email many PI’s and I did send out emails way later in the game. Hopefully this year I’ll have a better chance if I get everything sent out soon. @OneMata, how much did you get paid? Just curious…
@OneMata Hi! I have a couple questions as well.
- I’m a Highschool junior, and I’ve already turned in my application( I tried too late last year so I went for extra early this year). I’ve also emailed 2 Pi’s as of this morning. Are my chances good for getting in? I reaaaallly want to do it and not just for the college app boost.
- Any general tips on improving selectibility?
Thank you, any answer is appreciated.
Hi everyone! I’m also applying to NIH sip this year. I read online that we should write multiple cover letters for each PI we are contacting, but the application itself has room for only 1. How do we send the PIs different cover letters? Also, does anyone have tips on writing the CL and emails? Thanks and good luck to everyone else applying!
@BotFeederStatus since I’m just applying as well, I don’t really know much about NIH’s admissions, but since you’re applying so early (and you sound passionate about doing research), I’m sure u have a solid chance:)
@twelfthofnever from what I heard, undergraduates have a much easier chance of getting accepted compared to HS students b/c the PIs look favorably upon their greater knowledge and experience in science/research
@OneMata what kind of stuff did u write in ur cover letter? Did u have prior research experience when applying/what kind of qualities do you think helped u get into the program?
What do people do about housing? My D did a research program at Rockefeller last summer and is interested in doing research again and this looks like a wonderful program but curious about the housing part.
I heard that the PIs can be very helpful with acquiring housing over he summer, though if ur daughter is over 18 she can get housing from the universities nearby
I’m interested in how students who are under 18 deal with housing. In the past, my DS14 had to forgo pursuing research opportunities due to difficulty in searching for housing.
Hi guys! So i did this program last summer, under 18, from a different state. If anyone needs help feel free to message me, and I’ll contact you as soon as I can (college apps are hectic)
@juniormint2017 Ah thanks. Although, as a first-year, I do not have much more experience than you high school students. I suppose I’ll just add a lot of emphasis to my one intro lab course I’ve taken lol.
