They will want to see how much you know about their work, so if you have not already done so, please read up from their website and any publications.
@tryptophanoverload - how did your Skype call go?
@MedSciBud good apparently, because I got the position! I’m at NIEHS like you.
Congrats. Great to know of another person who will be at NIEHS. Are you in high school or college? Are you local to RTP?
Which lab in NIEHS will you be in? I will be at the Signal Transduction Lab with Dr. Xiaoling Li.
Let us be in touch. PM me if you prefer.
Thank you.
Sai
Hey guys, any Bethesda housing recommendations/tips for out-of-state student who is under 18?
Is there a NIH SIP facebook group?
Just had an interview today at NIEHS. I was surprised by how friendly and easygoing everyone at the lab seemed, it didn’t seem like an interview at all. Hopefully I’ll get the position, fingers crossed
Yeah it seems that NIEHS takes really good care of their interns.
@SJNccc - good luck. Let me know if you get into NIEHS. You (@SJNccc), @tryptophanoverload and I may be able to build a group of NIEHS SIPs!
Hi everyone! I’m an out-of-state high school junior looking for housing in Bethesda. Any advice?
Hey @xiaochelle, I’m in the same position as you too! I’ll pm you
A quick question to those who got accepted: my mentor sent an email to the program director to accept me in. Am I supposed to receive a confirmation email from NIH and if so, when?
@MedSciBud - That sounds great! I’ll PM you if I get accepted.
@RippleIllusion - the way it worked for me is: after the PI sent the email to the IC’s program coordinator, the program coordinator emailed me asking for paperwork including official school transcript, once they received all that, I received a bunch of automated emails from NIH. The process from PI to PC took less than a week (guess this depends on how many interns that IC has and how busy the PC is). From PC to paperwork to automated email took about 3 weeks including the time taken for me to send them the paperwork via USPS mail.
Hope this helps.
@SJNccc - are you in high school or college? Junior / Senior?
@tryptophanoverload - have you made the final decision whether you are taking up the NIEHS internship?
@MedSciBud, thank you for the informative reply! I guess I’ll wait a few more days for the program coordinator’s email to come in
I’m really interested in the typical daily schedule of an intern…can you describe your day? Where did you eat and live, and were there chances to meet other interns? Thanks!
@MedSciBud I prefer not to give out too much personal information online but yes, I will be going to niehs
@RippleIllusion - I have not started the internship. This summer will be first time for me, so I have no idea what the day will look like! I do know (from NIH website etc) that NIH has a lot of activities (in addition to the project). However, people who have done internship in the past may be able to let us know more.
@MedSciBud LOL whoops, thanks anyway!
@RippleIllusion American University is probably your best bet. They host a lot of summer interns. They have a shuttle to the Tenleytown redline Metro, which is two stops away from Medical Center/NIH
Thanks @PandaBearMom for the suggestion, but unfortunately I’m under their age requirement of 18
