NIH Summer Internship Program *2015-2016*

You might want to try the GWU dorms https://summerhousing.gwu.edu/individuals-options

I didn’t see an age requirement, but you’ll have to check it out. It is further away, but if you like an urban environment close to the National Mall and Foggy Bottom Metro, it may be for you.

Hi everyone! Is it too late to send out the emails? :expressionless:

@hello420 yeah you are really late. If you have a good resume and email 300+ PIs you might get one or two volunteer (unpaid) offers.

Thanks @tryptophanoverload!!!

I got the position at NIEHS!

@hello420 - It probably is a bit late, but I got contacted only last week, had an interview two days later, and today I got the confirmation email, so it definitely isn’t impossible (assuming you have credentials and are willing to mass email).

@MedSciBud - I’m a junior in high school. We can talk more through PM about the internship, I prefer not to give out personal information on the internet.

Congrats @SJNccc!!! You showed me some light. Did you write pretty detailed emails to the PIs?

@hello420 - Thanks! My emails were pretty general, and that is probably why I didn’t get many positive responses when emailing. Honestly, I got really lucky because a postdoc contacted me out of the blue. However, at this point, you should probably write detailed emails to a few PIs and try to get an unpaid position (make sure you read about their research before emailing them). Good luck with your search, and let me know if you have any more questions!

@SJNccc - congrats. See you at NIEHS.

@hello420 - any positive responses yet?

@MedSciBud - No response yet. :frowning:

Hi everyone,

I know this thread hasn’t been very active for a couple months but I thought I’d give it a shot anyway. I’m a rising senior in college and I just began my internship at the NIH (Bethesda). Does anyone know of a intern Facebook group or other ways to interact with interns? I’m the only intern in my lab section and to my knowledge there aren’t any other interns in near or adjacent labs. Thanks.

Sorry to bump this thread up after over a year but I need some advice concerning the NIH Summer Internship from past applicants. So, once you guys sent emails to Principal Investigators, did you guys follow up on those who didn’t respond, or you just took that as a no and moved on? Thanks.

No shame in bumping…a lot of us are in the same situation.

I emailed 30 people end of December and have gotten 2 responses that flat out said they were not taking interns. I’m considering re-emailing these individuals–though I gave a lot of description about my former research and how it relates to theirs.

In terms of research experience, I was a STS Semi-Finalist '16, and won many statewide research awards making it to ISEF and a few other national competitions. Maybe they’re looking for different skill set?

Any advice or thoughts would be so greatly appreciated :frowning:

Hi! I just found out about this program because my school does really keep in contact with any of these and no one in my school has ever done this before. Would it be too late to apply now? How early should I try to send in my application, and is it better to give my teachers more time to write out recommendations or is my application still submitted without those?

@anabanana101 This is the thread for last year, the updated thread is here.
