Hey everybody, I wanted to apply to the NIH Summer Research program because I'm interested in musculoskeletal disease. Part of the application is a cover letter that is supposed to detail why I am a perfect match for this specific program, expectations, and long-term goals all in under two pages. The problem is that I don't have any research experience, but I really want to attend. Could anybody please give me some tips on how to write a really good cover letter? Maybe some alumni from the program? Thanks in advance.

bump please?

My daughter was in the same position this year (in high school, also applying for NIH Summer Research program). In her letter she emphasized what her career goals are and what study experiences made her interested in the area she wants to research in. I have to warn you, though, that she emailed 6 labs over winter break regarding a specific interest in their research. Three of them responded that they have no budget for students this summer. So I think budget cuts are hitting NIH pretty hard for this summer.
