NJ Prep school admission

Extremely shocking to hear about some results today. many kids at 45%-50% on SSAT got accepted at Lawrenceville/Peddie.
Is it just a matter of money, if you are FP, you get in, If u apply for aid, you receive rejection. Any thoughts??

I seriously don’t know what these schools look for?

@Pansy23: It’s too many factors to try to figure out, TBH. Which is why most of the experienced parents on the forum (meaning they have shepherded one or more kids through the process successfully) advise to NOT think about the “whys” of it all — especially in the wake of a rejection.

And even for the same school, it changes from year to year. Yes, being full pay helps…that should be no surprise. But you don’t know if those 50% SSAT kids are impact players for a sport the school prioritizes or if they are first chair oboists (and the school is graduating their first chair that year).

I can say as a parent of a 7th grader who will be going through this process next year, I was watching your other thread.
.

Your childs scores were fantastic on the SSAT. My reaction from the M10 posts, that I have seen was not many accepted to Lawrenceville.

I hope your child enjoys the school she does end up choosing. In the admission process is it a question of Full FA or just asking for some assistance? We are just starting this process.

Many thanks to both of you for your response…I knew that Lawrenceville was definitely very hard to get in but few other schools like Hun and Pennington were a shocker. She got in RPS with excellent funding however it’s just just sad to see your kid disappointed and ask why was I rejected☹️ Even the WL gives them a sense of accomplishment…

I disagree, I think many other factors come to play. With a 99th percentile and full pay, I still got rejected—I am not bitter at all, since I got accepted into Milton which I love—but I think they really take many other things to account.

If your child got into a school she likes that’s affordable for you, I’d try not to worry about the others. There were several posts today from kids with either no acceptances or acceptances without adequate funding. Others were only wait listed, and they don’t seem to view that as an accomplishment. Your daughter’s very fortunate. Try to help her find things to love about the school that accepted her.

Yes, you are absolutely correct, she is very lucky to get into the school which is welcoming and it is affordable. I’m trying to convince her that she shouldn’t feel that she failed. Like many others commented, we do not know the admission criteria for these top schools and given the number of competitive kids across the globe who apply, only a few can be admitted:)

It feels like a competition, but you cannot view it that way. Schools take the kids they think they can be most successful with, and especially for high school age kids, it’s also how they will do emotionally and socially in that environment. And of course, the ones who fill in the fabric of their schools (athletics, etc.)

I have written this before, but can guarantee that DS was saved when a top school rejected him (with great SSAT and FP, etc.) Where he ended up was perfect, and I don’t know if we would have turned our backs on prestige and focused on fit at that point. And the lesson learned then served him well 4 years later in the college search.

Congrats to your D. Don’t worry about everyone else, just celebrate her acceptance and exciting 4 years ahead.

@SevenDad : Agree with SevenDad. If I had to guess, I would say that many were probably needed, not necessarily impact, athletes.

Thank you all for all the encouragement!! makes us feel a lot better…and good luck to everyone who are on WL

@Pansy23: Do you know any of those admitted with 45%-50% SSAT scores ? If so, are they athletes ?

I didn’t see those details, just read some acceptances on this forum…

Are you saying Hun and Pennington were hard to get into this year?
