NM Semi-Finalists Colleges of Interest?

Which NM Schools have piqued your child's interest?

Son getting tons of email and a couple of phone calls from Oklahoma over the past few months. Just yesterday got a big Alabama package, which was rare because they haven't reached out much at all.

@Joe2015…Kentucky and Central Florida both have outstanding scholarship packages for NMFs as well. Less out of pocket expense over 4 years than Bama or Oklahoma, but all 4 are excellent schools with great programs.

We looked very seriously at Kentucky; getting into the Honors program is actually difficult.

For the right student, New Mexico is worth looking at, especially if you live in the west; their [honors magazine](<a href=“http://scribendi.unm.edu/"]honors”>http://scribendi.unm.edu/) is [nationally recognized](<a href=“http://news.unm.edu/news/unm-honors-magazine-wins-prestigious-national-award"]nationally”>UNM Honors Magazine Wins Prestigious National Award: UNM Newsroom), if that sort of thing interests your child.

A school that is seldom mention on CC is University of Evansville. It’s more of a small liberal arts college than its name suggests, and they have a [really cool campus](<a href=“http://www.harlaxton.ac.uk/"]really”>http://www.harlaxton.ac.uk/) in England. NMF is tuition only.

D just got notified she got in to the Honors program. We visited a couple of weeks ago and she really liked it. The dorms are amazing!

@isaelijohjac congratulations!

Which honors program?

@Joe2015‌ sorry, UK honors program :)

That’s great! Is this one of her top choices?

@isaeljohjac Has she named UK has her top choice on the NMF application?

@joe2015 no she hasn’t yet.

@isaelijohjac‌ Congratulations! When did your D apply? I applied as well, and I’m curious as to how long I should wait before I start pestering the Honors Admissions office.

@Venator15‌ she heard pretty quickly but I think they say they will notify by February. Have you been to visit? That may help in learning…

@isaelijohjac‌ okay, thanks! I’ll probably call them soon then. I visited the campus in April, and I loved it. I talked with one of the Honors admissions guys while I was there, but apparently a lot has changed since last year (ex. Rolling Admissions for Honors), so all of the info that I was given regarding dates is outdated. My acceptance letter to the University itself was dated 10/8, so I know Honors must have reviewed my application by now. Oh well, I guess it’s time to settle in and wait until February… On a completely separate note, I wonder if they sell Xanax in 3 month supplies…?

Once that Alabama package arrived a month ago – that was basically it for our son. Reads the other info coming in, but it just gets tucked away. If your son hasn’t checked out all that Alabama offers, (not only scholarship generosity, but opportunity-wise), I’d highly recommend it!!! The University of Alabama thread on CC (heck, all over CC in general) is packed with information and words of wisdom that will accelerate your learning curve with respect to UA’s top notch programs. There are quite a few parents whose NMF students have already even finished their degree careers at UA and still post – so positive was their experience that they are out sharing their info for our benefit. Enjoy!

@isaelijohjac, how did the honors notification come from UK?

@celesteroberts…Our D2 has also been invited to join Honors at UKy, and she was notified through her student e-mail that she set up after receiving her acceptance. :slight_smile:

Thanks Wolverine.

I guess son should get his UK application sent off. Is there a rush to be considered for honors or to get better housing? Which, by the way, heard was fantastic!

@Joe2015…Honors admission is a rolling process but with the increased number of applicants due to UKy accepting the Common App, Honors admission has become very competitive. What they’ve said they’re doing is extending Honors invites to very strong candidates early on, but many students may not hear until February.

There is definitely an advantage to applying early when it comes to Housing. When we toured in the Spring, we were told that over 90 percent of students are requesting housing in the new dorms and Housing assignments are done based on your Housing application date. I believe they give priority to LLP requests though, so if your S is interested in any of the LLPs that reside in the newer res halls that might overcome a later application date.

Whoa, I had no idea that Honors admission was rolling. Was it always that way?

@suzy100…I don’t think it’s always been that way. This may be the first year that they’re doing it as rolling admissions, because I seem to remember them telling us last Spring that Honors invites would come out in February. When we were told they’d be rolling invites this year, they did stress to us that anyone who doesn’t receive an early invite shouldn’t read anything into that. Honors invites will continue to be sent out up through February, although I suppose the response rate on the early invites could influence the number of later invites?

@celesteroberts‌ is your daughter attending UK?
