University of Kentucky for NM?

D is narrowing her list. So far Alabama is number 1. Kentucky also offers a program that she is interested in and offers a decent scholarship for NM. Denison is another school on her list, but that scholarship is competitive. Wayne State in Detroit has the library science she is interested in, but her guidance counselor told her to "aim higher". I know nothing about Wayne State yet, so I'm not sure about this comment.

Anyway, anyone have any experience with U of Kentucky, or I guess Wayne State for that matter? She needs to have 5 -6 schools on her Naviance list before Friday. D has done all the online research that she can, but I like the advice we've been getting here.

Also, does anyone know if U of Michigan gives scholarship money for OOS
NMF?

On its face the Denison NM Scholarship (Paschal Carter) is competitive, but there are 20 to be given and in 2010 Denison admitted 13 National Merit Finalists. Looks to me as if virtually all NMFs get that or an equivalent scholarship at Denison.

linnylu…U of Michigan does not offer any special scholarship for NMF’s. I know this past year there were some OOS kids that were offered merit aid (a lot were going into the College of Engineering) but overall U of Mich is pretty stingy with merit aid. Our D1 was IS with excellent stats (3.99UW/4.15W, 36 ACT, 2400 SAT, top 3% rank, NMF) and they offered her a one-time $1500 scholarship. Kinda disappointing…but she’s thrilled to be a Golden Gopher!!

Regarding Wayne State, you’d probably need to visit and decide for yourself. I think their academic programs are solid, but many folks would be put off by the proximity of the campus to the downtown Detroit area. We briefly considered it for D1 as a backup plan since she could’ve stayed IS, but she wasn’t comfortable with the campus/location/etc. If they have a program she’s interested in, I’d strongly suggest a visit if possible.

Linnylu: people interested in becoming librarians don’t generally major in library science as an undergrad. A quick look at job listings will show that a MLIS is the entry degree for Librarian jobs. Feel free to PM me :)
