My junior S and I are visiting U Tulsa next week. He will almost certainly be NMF next year. Interested in Tulsa's Presidential Scholarship, but understand that it is competitive.

Those NMFs(or parents) who applied in recent years, can you post if you did or did not receive Pres., and if not, did you receive some smaller scholarship- how much? If you could include any other helpful info, like how many campus visits and when, any other contacts you made. In or out of state and if OOS, far away? GPA/test scores. Did you name them first choice early? Did you take the award or go elsewhere? If you'd rather PM than post, that's good too. Trying to assess S's chances and what he might expect if he doesn't get Pres. I'll ask admissions counselor, but not sure how specific of info she'll tell. I know other students not NMFs get this award also, but mostly interested in what it takes for NMF to get it.

I've read through the threads here that discuss this, and my general sense is that kids who don't receive Pres. get full tuition instead. Trying to gauge if that is accurate. In particular, would like to hear if someone received less than that, as one past poster made reference to possibility of getting 1/2 tuition, though didn't claim to know this directly.

Will start a similar thread in NMF forum, to try to catch more replies. Thanks in advance.

My oldest was NM and never completed the essay for the presidential - long story - but it seems that almost immediately he received notice of full tuition. So I think yes to your question.

Also, how was your visit? This school is on my youngest’s list as well and we have not had time to visit yet.

My DS received the Vision scholarship immediately. He applied for the Presidential, but did not get it - they gave a little extra $$ with his notice that he was not selected. He was not a NMF, but was in top 1% ACT. There was confusion on whether the student needed to be top 5% or top 10% of class. DS was 7% - admissions counselor told him to go ahead and apply. So I don’t know if his app was immediately thrown out based on that or if it was reviewed and he just did not get it.

deborahb, just saw your post, thanks. Our visit didn’t happen. Got stuck waiting the whole day in a midpoint airport as airplane had door trouble. We got periodic announcements about how the epoxy was drying, ha. After many hours, cancelled. No flight available to Tulsa until late the next day so we found a flight home instead. After that experience, don’t know if I can get him to visit ANY colleges. I tried to persuade him to drive to Tulsa instead later that week but my idea was promptly shot down.Tulsa has a special visit day for juniors on 6/9, but that’s his finals week. I suppose we’ll drive down during the summer and if he likes it at all will go for another visit when school is in session in the fall.

@celesteroberts‌…are you familiar with Tulsa Time at TU? They offer both a day program and and overnight where high school students can stay in the dorm with a host student. It’s a really popular program that gives high school students a good feel for what TU is like. Your son might want to look into that in the fall. Here’s a link to the information from the event in 2013, just so you can see what they do.
