HImom-I just checked the requirements for moving from semifinalist to finalist. Number 5 does indicate that the school should notify MN Corp. if there is a noticeable decline in academic performance during the current year. Maybe that’s what happened.

When do we find out finalist status?

I feel HORRIBLE for those kids that get the bad news this time of year. From what I’ve read in the NM threads over the last year or so, the level of understanding/support of the NMSF to NMF process varies GREATLY between various High Schools. I sure hope that some of these kids aren’t victims of “lukewarm” support from their school principal or GC. I know our D1’s school only gets a few NMSF’s at most in any given year (often none) and the GC that was “in charge” of the NM kids last year didn’t have the first clue about how much money was potentially available to the students through the “unofficial” college awards. It was very scary.

Wolverine86…could you please explain what is meant by “unofficial” awards. I am new to this whole process.

It seems like if you have 2 Cs or less, you are safe, regardless of the school.

No…the number of semi-finalists at your school is NOT a factor.

That Thomas Jefferson school in Virginia (or whatever it’s name is) often has 150+ NMFs every year.

*could you please explain what is meant by “unofficial” awards. I am new to this whole process. *

Schools that give HUGE NMF awards are not totally “official NMF awards”. For instance, Bama gives full tuition, housing, $1k per year, etc to NMFs.

However, ONLY the $1k per year is the “official” NMF scholarship - so it gets processed thru NMCorp…the rest (the bulk of the NMF scholarship) is NOT official.

Any idea if they count non-academic classes on the C thing…? Things like 9 week of TV production that I took in 9th grade? It’d be pretty sad if that cost me NMF.

No, as I wrote previously, S got at least a few Cs & was still a NMF. I don’t think they like it if you have Cs in SR year though, according to our neighbor whose S didn’t advance to NMF, which she believes was for that reason–a C SF year.

Anybody from California get one yet? :/

In any case, I have two Cs, but otherwise good grades and great letter of rec from counselor. Probably should be OK, but it’s hard to be sure.

Got 2 C’s in academic classes… one in freshman honors bio and one in sophomore honors chem. Just found out today I have 2 more C’s, but both were freshman year vocational classes (TV production and web design) and both were only 9-week classes. All A’s and B’s junior and senior year, though.

* I don’t think they like it if you have Cs in SR year though,*

In many cases, NMCorp doesn’t really know if you have C’s senior year since transcripts are sent so early…October. Quarter grades should not be considered…and many don’t even have quarter grades at that point.

I would think that NMCorp would use a standard…either everyone’s first quarter grades are considered, or no ones.

Frankly, most schools’ transcripts don’t even show quarter grades. My kids’ school only showed Year End grades…that’s it. No semester grades, no quarter grades…just one Year End grade per class.

Got 2 C’s in academic classes… one in freshman honors bio and one in sophomore honors chem. Just found out today I have 2 more C’s

Tommy…NMCorp has no idea about those C’s…your transcript was sent months ago. There is no update.

Were the earlier C’s for quarter? or for semester?

They’re from freshman year, so they are most likely on the transcript. They’re quarter classes… but both quarter grades show up as semester C’s. It was a weird system. The other 2 C’s are both semester grades.

has anyone gotten any letter in regards to national achievement yet?

Oh, I thought you meant that you just found out that you’re getting 2 C’s from this year.

Do you know if your transcript has quarter grades…often transcripts do not include quarter grades.

Anyway…NMCorp may not consider quarter grades, so how many semester C’s do you have?

If I live about a 1/2 hour from Evanston and I haven’t gotten a letter, am I probably safe?

Probably. I’m in Park Ridge, and I got it Monday.

4 semester C’s, two of them nonacademic. Just got back from Tuscaloosa and still no rejection letter… safe for one more day!

^Thanks for keeping us informed.

Aside about “unofficial” awards - Auburn also has an amazing scholarship for NMFs - they even give $1000 technology allowance the 1st semester & money to study overseas after 3 semesters. My son hasn’t received a rejection letter yet, so we’re hopeful that he’ll be studying there. He wants to be an engineer & their new engineering school, that was completed this year, is an impressive complex. Auburn & Alabama both have their strengths depending on the major. Auburn has the highest ranked engineering school in the state.

Auburn’s NMF scholarship isn’t guaranteed, and it’s not a “full ride” anymore.
