It's very likely that the rejection letters were mailed out yesterday. Typically, those who don't make finalist get a letter between Jan 9 - 17th (depending on your mail).

So, if you don't receive a rejection letter by about the 3rd week of Jan, you can rather safely assume that you'll be notified that you made NMF in February. When my son made NMF, his school notified him first...I think that's still how it's done.

However, if your grades were good, your SAT was fine, you did the paperwork, you sent in your SAT scores, and you're not a discipline problem at school, you'll very likely make NMF. :)

If you get a rejection letter which you believe to be a mistake, then do contact NMCorp and appeal.

As someone who is hoping that son makes Finalist next year, it is really scary to hear what happened.

Was it related to GPA, such as, S not taking honor/ AP classes? Did he have Cs or Ds in junior year? Was his class rank below 25 percentile? Or do you think it was something completely different?

Wizk…did you get a rejection letter? Did you apply to Bama before Dec 1st? If so, then you still get the full tuition scholarship.

Did the letter indicate why you were rejected? Was it valid?

Edited to add:

*GPA–3.02 unweighted, 3.88 weighted *

Looks like your grades hurt you. How many Cs? any D’s?

*my son got a rejection letter. would you happen to have any insight into the appeal process? thanks. *

What reason was given for the rejection?

Perazziman…no, it’s not related to “not taking APs or honors classes” or “rank”…those aren’t a consideration for making NMF. It’s typically…C/Ds for semester grades (usually a C or 2 is ok, but not more than that), discipline problem at school, SAT below about 1970, or not filling out the paperwork.

It was definitely the five C’s, but I’d hoped my counselor’s multiple references to my ADHD might help… guess not. I still met up tonight with a group of guys I was planning on rooming with to watch the game, and the full tuition is still as good of an offer as I’ve received (surprisingly, I have gotten a fair amount of money from the six schools I’ve been accepted to thus far).

wizkhalifa1 I’m sorry for your bad news. The brighter side is all of the offers you did receive. Would you mind telling us which other schools you applied to? My son is a Junior this year and I’m looking for more ideas of which schools are generous. Thanks and good luck.

reason for rejection was course work. though he’s only taken honors and AP when that was an option, he pulled a few C’s which hit his gpa. (our school only weights AP, but not honors, which affected class rank.) if the C’s are the problem, then we’ll have to accept the outcome.

Just got my rejection letter… not sure what I’m going to do now; I was really counting on NMF scholarships to be able to afford the schools I’ve been considering…

I know exactly why I didn’t make finalist: my ninth grade year had some serious blemishes as a result of family issues to the tune of a divorce, change in school, and custody battle followed by another change in school. My experience that year and how I have changed as a result were the subject of my essay, and my GC told me she’d mention the conditions in her rec, but I suppose NMC doesn’t really care about circumstances, just the numbers. My school calculates GPA strangely and only gives weighted–mine is ~3.5 according to them, but upon actual calculation, unweighted my GPA is 3.47 and weighted it is 3.73. So grades were definitely the reason for me.

Nonetheless, I will be calling in hopes of appealing; the worst they can say at this point is no, I suppose.

Didn’t make it…3.5 unweighted gpa and a 4.6 weighted. 2100 SAT, no discipline problems. I was shocked to be honest. I’ll definitely be appealing this.

Any C’s? If so, how many were semester grades?

Any D’s?

If anyone has a low grade for a quarter grade, but not as a semester grade (and your school reports quarter grades), then I would definitely make the point that most schools do not report quarter grades so your transcript should be viewed in that light and only semester grades be considered.

What was the reason given in the rejection letter???

@m2ck: maybe 3-4 C’s, no D’s. But my courseload was very rigorous, I was hoping that would offset it some. The reason was my academic record or something like that.

I think last year or so, people were reporting that 1 or 2 C’s were ok, but not more than that.

NMCorp doesn’t seem to care about course rigor…that would require each student’s transcript to be compared with what a school offers, and I don’t think NMCorp does that…at least no one has ever indicated that they didn’t make it because they didn’t take APs or whatever…but still had a high GPA.

Furthermore, when my son made NMF, one of the other NMFs hadn’t taken ANY APs nor had he taken Calculus, so in that case rigor didn’t matter.

I also don’t think class rank matters and I would point to the schools that have 100+ NMFs each year. It’s very doubtful that all of those kids would have high rankings.

Do semester grades have to be reported to NMCorp? I asking info for my current junior. Son’s standard HS transcript only includes year end grades, would NMCorp see that or all quarterly grades? No C’s by year end, but C’s for some quarters (don’t know how many - trying to forget Freshman year.)
