NMF Scholarship Question

If a student gets offered an NMS from a corporation and accepts it, will he/she still be able to receive the $1,000 per year University National Merit/Achievement Scholarship?

I’m not sure, check with the Scholarship Office in the Honors College next week.

My first thought was yes only because UA does permit “stacking” scholarships. Our son recieved a one time $2000 scholarship from a local organization. This did not reduce his NMF Scholarship. On the other hand, you may want to re-read the rules and guidelines on the National Merit Scholarship Corp’s website.

BTW, Congratulations on earning NMF!

Thank you! I’m questioning it because I’m not sure if the UA $1000 is their “official” NMF Scholarship.

Although Bama allows stacking scholarships, a NMF is only allowed to accept one “official” NMF scholarship that is managed thru NMCorp.

So, when my son was awarded the corporate NMF scholarship of $2500/yr, he couldn’t also receive the $1k/yr portion of the Bama NMF scholarship (because that is the “official” NMF part of the Bama scholarship).

But, that’s ok…because it’s better to get $2500/yr than $1k/yr.

You can only accept 1 official NMF scholarship… it’s actually a little complicated choosing which one.

For instance, if the National Merit Corporation offers their one-time $2,500 scholarship, and you haven’t received a corporate offer, you MUST accept the NMC scholarship. You can’t elect to receive the college-sponsored one- which means in UA’s case, if you receive the $2,500 scholarship you are actually worse off than if you got UA’s college sponsored offer. You CAN choose a corporate award over the NMC one, though. At least as I understand it.

Somehow, I don’t think that’s right. When we went thru this with our son, NMCorp called us a few times during this awarding timeframe to make sure our son would get the max money possible.

Thanks everyone. I was second guessing myself toward the end of my posting. I have heard students declining the larger one time NMF scholarships to take advantage of the individual university or college NMF offer.

I would be glad to be wrong. That’s simply how Casey Ricketts, head of the Honors Recruitment at Texas A&M University, explained it to me. Colleges offer their sponsored scholarships for NMF’s in order to bump the candidate from “Finalist” standing to “Scholar” standing, which is why it’s listed as a seperate scholarship from the ‘main’ section of funds.

Only around 700 students get the NMC award anyway, and obviously not having gone through this before I can’t speak with authority. I was just offering the explanation I was given.

^^^

It is all very weird. It’s best to call NMCorp with any specific questions.

Nat’l Merit Corp 847-866-5100

And, if I was concerned that I would be offered the one time $2500 and that I wouldn’t be allowed to refuse it, I would let NMCorp know ahead of time that I didn’t want to be chosen. lol

BTW…2500 students get the NMCorp scholarship of $2500 (one time scholarship).

^ You’re right on that number. It’s National Achievement that chooses 700, I found out today that TAMU gave me the wrong number on that. That might also be the source of the refusal/acceptance discrepancy, I may contact Casey Ricketts again on that.

So if we’re offered the $2500, we can’t get a college sponsored award? Or is that only if we accept the $2500?

^^^

I would call NMCorp for clarification.

Are you talking about the $2500 one time award from NMCorp. Today is the first time I’ve ever heard that if you’re offered the one time $2500 award you MUST accept it and therefore you can’t accept the $1,000 annual award from Bama (the big NM scholarship is not “official” so you still get that.)

Again, if NMCorp told me that my son HAD to accept the one time $2500 offer and therefore have to decline the $4000, I’d tell them not to choose my kid. LOL

@bamalover are you a national merit finalist and do you intend on going to univ alabama if possible?

squelchy…are you a NMF (or a likely NMSF)?

Are you a junior or senior?

yes i am a NMF and intend on attending UA
