Cool, thanks for that pointer!

trying to get a smiley to work – ahh there we go :D

Jkiwmom - I’m sorry, I responded too hastily to your question. My OU response was for Oklahoma, not Ohio.

[National Merit Scholars - Boise State Admissions](http://admissions.boisestate.edu/nationalmerit/)

Boise is a great small city and the school is getting better and better.

Hi all, my daughter is a 2011 semifinalist, and I am REALLY glad to have found this thread! From what I can see, post #317 has the lastest list, dated 7/23/2010, and posted by Keilexandra. Sounds like she has gone to Swarthmore, one of the schools my daughter is interested in. Keilexandra, did you Swarthmore offer you a NMF scholarship?

Swat doesn’t give NMF scholarships. 99% of Swat’s aid is need-based…not merit.

Swat offers a very small number of specialty scholarships… but the big ones do consider “financial need” for their award. [Swarthmore College :: Financial Aid :: Special Scholarships](http://www.swarthmore.edu/x11842.xml)

If your D wants/needs a merit scholarship, then Keil’s list pretty much tells you which schools give them.

Thanks! We’ll take a close look at the list that Keil posted.

MYMOM2011, you’ll want to double-check the info on any schools you’re interested in. Keilexandra’s list was modified over time as new information came in, either adding or deleting schools. I’ve had good luck using google’s site-specific search feature. For instance, using the search string

national merit site:swarthmore.edu

turns up nothing except for announcements about students who received NMF awards, while

national merit site:arizona.edu

turns up links to Arizona’s awards.

Also, Keilexandra’s list does not list every single NMF award, just those that offer at least $5k/year and are guaranteed. Other schools may offer competitive NMF scholarships, which is where it’s useful to comb through the list of schools that your child is considering and see if there’s any NMF possibilities.

I have seen that at least a few of these need you indicate that the college is your first choice school in order to get a scholarship. Is that the case for all the schools?

That is the normal procedure for schools that give out National Merit scholarship. Since you can attend only one school so it should not be an issue to name that school as your first choice school. You have also sometime to decide.

cristiline…

Right now you can be “undecided.” However, some schools have deadlines sometime after Jan 1st to be named #1. I don’t think any school requires you to name them before Jan 1st. Hopefully, if there is such a school, someone will name it.

And…you can change your first choice later on. You can either mail or fax in your change. You’ve been given a postcard in your package, but there is also a form you can down load from the NM Corp website to change your #1 selection.

Some schools don’t require you to name them #1 until April.

Yes, but you have time. My son stayed “undecided” until he had all acceptances and scholarship offers in hand. You do need to be mindful of when each college requires you to select them as your #1.

On the list of honorable mentions for Private Schools, Cedarville University in Ohio gives guaranteed 50% tuition for NMSF, which is stackable with certain other academic scholarships.

Time to update the list as a service to the community. The OP has moved on to Swarthmore (and no, they don’t offer NM scholarships there more’s the pity), so I’ve taken Keilexandra’s last list and updated it with any info added by posters. Keil’s modus operandi was to confirm any entries by what’s on the school website, not just hearsay. If you come across any changes or new entries, I’d suggest posting the link and then updating the list.

I’ve created a shortcut URL, if you’d like to share the list with others:

Slithey…thank you! :)

Florida State University offers $6000 per year for four years to NMF (a total of $24,000)

An update on ASU, based on a letter I received dated 9/27/2010:

This is from a letter I received from ASU dated September 30. There seems to be a difference in what was offered in your letter. I am OOS and sent my application in prior to notification of my NMSF status.
I wonder if my offer was less because I showed an early interest in ASU.

"Thank you for your application to Arizona State University. Upon admission, you will be automatically reviewed for one of our **New American University Scholarships, ** valued at up to $9,000 annually for a four-year value of $36,000. Should you become a National Merit Finalist and indicate Arizona State University as your first choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, ASU will replace your scholarship with the **ASU National Merit Finalist Scholarship. **This is an award of $13,000 renewable for three additional years, for a total four-year value of $52,000.

^^Sounds like ASU has a sliding scale.
