NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation

My PSAT score was 230 and my SAT score was 2340, so I’m assuming I’d be on the higher end of the scale if that’s how its determined. I’m sorta disappointed about the scholarship offer. When my GC brought ASU to my attention he was talking about a full ride plus room and board. It looks like that has dwindled significantly.
Either way I guess I should start exploring other options. I really appreciate the OP and others that have worked so hard to maintain this list for the rest of us. Thank you!

^Mam000, I think you should contact ASU about your letter. Don’t give up so fast! If I understood you right, you didn’t indicate your NMSF status at the time of your application, right? Because you didn’t have it yet, I assume. So, if I were you, I would definitely call the financial aid office (or whomever sent you the letter), to ask about the differences in stated amounts. And I would ask outright whether you would qualify for the non-resident full tuition scholarship, given your NMSF status and your very high stats, in the event you named ASU as #1. I’m betting anything, you should have gotten the same letter as the other student on this thread! Good luck!

Thanks, SimpleLife. I am going to give the financial aid office a call and also let my GC know. I haven’t given up on ASU, I love the Barrets Honors Colllege.

@Mam000: Your stats are comparable to mine, so I would have expected you to receive a similar letter. My guess is that they did not know you made NMSF.

noimagination: My letter started with the same sentence as yours, congratulating me on my NMSF status.
“Congratulations on your selection as a National Merit Semifinalist, a distinction that places you in the company of recognized scholars from around the nation.”

I haven’t had a chance to speak to anyone at ASU or my GC, I’ll see what they have to say about it. Hopefully I get an offer similar to yours.

Update to list: My daughter saw admissions at Alma College yesterday. Their scholarship has changed a bit. They now offer 10 full tuition/5 full ride competative.

Updated Florida State and Alma. Waiting to hear confirmation about ASU.

[Nonresident National Merit Scholars at OSU](http://www.okstate.edu/finaid/nationalscholars/nonresident11-12.html)

While this doesn’t qualify as a full ride, it’s pretty close. Perhaps we need a “full-tuition++” designation?

Mam000 and noimagination - My S did not apply to ASU, but did receive a letter on 9/27 congratulating him on NMSF. His stats are similar to Mam000.

ASU said if he is admitted, he would be automatically reviewed for one of our New American University Scholarships, valued at UP TO (my caps) $13K annually for a 4-yr value of $52K.

Letter continues with - ASU is also pleased to offer a limited number of nonresident NMF scholarships for NMF who indicate ASU as their first choice school. This cash award in the am’t of nonresident tuition replaces any ASU scholarship offer, and remains the same $ am’t throughout eight semesters of eligibility.

I don’t know if the second scholarship makes you ineligible for the first.

Just an fyi–went to an out of state college fair last week and spoke with an admissions rep. from Northeastern. I specifically asked him if their NMF full tuition scholarships were competitive or not, and he said they were not. He said if you are a National Merit Finalist and designate Northeastern as your first choice, you will receive a full tuition award.

My D received a letter from the University of Alabama that seems to say that what is offered for 2011-12 is not exactly a full ride; it seems to include room but not board, but then adds some extras.

The letter says that in addition to the Presidential Scholarship (which provides the value of tuition for 4 years of undergraduate study), finalists will receive “four years of on-campus housing and $1000 University National Merit Scholarship per year for four years (if you do not receive a National-sponsored scholarship). Because we believe that broadened horizons are increasingly essential to success, we also will give you a one-time $2000 stipend for use in summer research or an international study experience after your freshman year at UA. A special addition to the scholarship package is a free laptop computer upon your arrival on campus.” The enclosed certificate says National Merit Finalists will receive “regular on-campus housing for four years.”

The website says that NMFs receive “4 years of on-campus housing at regular room rate* (based on assignment by Housing and Residential Communities).” There is no footnote to which the asterisk refers.

I can’t determine from this whether NMFs receive the VALUE of regular housing (so a NMF who lived in honors housing would receive a contribution toward the cost of honors housing) or whether they receive nothing toward the cost of the room if Housing and Residential Communities assign the NMF a room that is not a regular room.

I have read the relevant pages of Alabama’s website but haven’t been able to find a definitive answer. Does anyone have any further insight into this?

Of course, I can contact Alabama tomorrow if necessary, but thought I’d draw the attention of others to this and see if someone already knows.

The UA award technically doesn’t cover board, but departmental scholarships can make up the difference, as well as other expenses. Their NM award is one of the most generous in the country. Mom2collegekids is the most knowledgeable person when it comes to the Alabama scholarship.

True…it doesn’t include a meal plan.

Ok…this is how it works at Bama. If a NMF student chooses honors housing, the **ENTIRE cost of honors housing is COVERED /B.

But, if a student chooses cheaper housing, the school doesn’t give the student the difference. They do need to fix that asterisk thingy…LOL

The scholarship will cover any increases in tuition and housing. That can be significant because we all know costs go up every year. So, if another school is offering a specific amount (like $15k per year), that value kind of lessens when tuition goes up.

There are other scholarships available that can be stacked. For instance, if the student is majoring in any area of Engineering or Computer Science, then the College of Engineering will give the student $2500 per year.

ASU update v2:

Per a letter from Mark Jacobs - Dean of the Barrett Honors College - dated 10/8/2010:

That sounds a lot more guaranteed than competitive…

North Dakota State University

Per a letter dated 10/18/2010:

I had previously read on the NDSU website that only resident tuition was covered, but this would seem to imply that OOS tuition is also free. Though I am in a WUE state, so perhaps this letter doesn’t apply elsewhere.

If anyone is interested in this, I encourage you to give the Office of Admission a call at 701-231-8643 or 800-488-NDSU. Their email is ndsu.admission@ndsu.edu

I’m sure they can clarify the terms.

For K-State
We received a letter stating minimum guarantee of $8,000 (in-state tuition $7500) Other scholarships are possible. They wanted application by Nov 1st of senior year though! I’ll post when I hear more.
