NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation

Thank you for all the great information. She already took the SAT once in October and received a 2310. Since we didn’t know the her PSAT at the time we didn’t send them to anyone (yet). She is planning to take them again in June we’ll send the best scores after that.

The “list” I was referring to is the list of schools that give scholarships related to NMF.I guess I wasn’t very clear.

I just want to say thank you again to everyone who contributed info on this thread. She’s my first and I really think I wouldn’t know half as much as I do without you guys.

Good luck to everyone taking the AP Exams this week!

Wolverine states: Whether or not she becomes a finalist is primarily based on her achieving a “qualifying” score on the SAT that “validates” her PSAT score (normally around 1960-2000 range). MAKE SURE she lists the code for NMSC on her SAT score report since they need her scores in order to confirm she qualifies. She also needs to demonstrate continued strong academic performance (keep her grades reasonably strong during senior year) and no major disciplinary issues. Assuming all that is met, the notification of NMF status will be in February of her senior year.

What if my dd took the SAT and did not list the code for NMSC on her score report since she didn’t realize she would get a notification letter. Can we just send the scores to NMSC like we will send them to colleges?

Yes…

Just send the SAT scores to NMCorp by Dec 2011. Code 0085

Auburn has tightened its conditions for awarding its NMF and NMSF scholarships:

Quote:
National Merit and Achievement Finalists must have a minimum 3.5 high school GPA and meet the February 1 application for admission deadline.
National Scholars Presidential Scholarships are limited and awarded competitively for non-residents.

For semifinalists, the scholarship is limited to in-state students who have a minimum 3.5 high school GPA.

Change at UW-Eau Claire from full-tuition guaranteed to $5,000 competitive to 5 students.

Gordon College (Wenham, MA, not the Georgia one) pays three-quarters tuition to National Merit Finalists who rank among the top 10% of their high school class (~$22,000 as of 2011-2012). It’s renewed every year if the Scholars maintain a 3.5 GPA.

Wow…3.5 GPA req’t to keep the scholarship is a bit high.

Can anybody please guide me to such a list of Universities which give full rides or such type of scholarships? This is an extensive guide and a list but I’m pretty sure its meant for only US nationals? Right?

*full rides to internationals

usamatiwana–This thread is about specific scholarships for students who score at a certain level on a specific test (PSAT) during their junior year in high school.

You might consider starting a new thread for information because what you are looking for is a different subject all together.

usamat…

You may need to visit the int’l forum.

This isn’t the right forum for you.

So guys do you think it is worth going to one of these schools instead of a top college?

There is some merit, ZombieDante, to attending a school that is recruiting you. The schools often have programs tailored to NMF (or top students in general) that give them a smaller community feel. Our former MD was a NMS as a young woman and she attended a small school that offered her a full ride. She thought it was great and she was one of the finest docs I have ever met.

Zombie…A lot of the basis for that decision depends on your family’s financial situation. If they are in a position to pay whatever fees remain after other scholarships and FA are applied, then you have the luxury of being able to consider many more schools than most people are. If not…then you need to be more pragmatic.

I think it’s also a mistake (and a disservice to these institutions) to think you’d somehow be “settling” by attending one of them. What criteria are you using to define a “top” school? USNWR rankings? Perceived value based on name recognition? I’d recommend to anyone to take the REAL value of graduating from an undergrad program with reduced or no debt over the PERCEIVED value of attending one of the so-called “top” colleges.

If none of the schools offering great NMF money is a fit for you, then by all means don’t “force the fit”. But don’t be distracted by the shiny objects USNWR wants you to lust after. There are many great institutions whose doors will be opened for you by NMF status. Research the ones that have programs that match your interests, and definitely visit the ones that you can. Save your money for grad school if that is part of your plans, or at least don’t start out your working career with a mountain of unnecessary student debt. IMHO…substance will always win out over fluff.

Applause, Wolverine.

My son just graduated from college after having a big NMF scholarship.

He has no regrets. He’s starting his PhD at a top school in August…all fully funded as well.

Hi, I was just looking at NMCorp’s list of schools that sponsor the program, and Boston College was on there as of the last round of admisions. Has this changed in the past year? I can’t find any info on it when I google it, and it isn’t on this list.

Also, I was wondering why American has been left off the list. Is it because the website doesn’t state any money amounts? I read on a different source (guaranteed-tuition, or something or other) that the amounts range from $10,000 to full tuition. I know we should wait until we hear it from the school itself, though.

On a slightly different note, the school you list as your top choice may offer you their NMF scholarship as well as other merit aid you qualify for, yes? The NMF schoolar scholarship is just like any other scholarship and doesn’t overrule other merit aid they may offer?

Thanks in advance!

You should email both schools’ scholarship offices and ask what ASSURED scholarships they give to NMFs.

If they don’t have assured, then maybe that’s why they’re not listed here.

*On a slightly different note, the school you list as your top choice may offer you their NMF scholarship as well as other merit aid you qualify for, yes? The NMF scholar scholarship is just like any other scholarship and doesn’t overrule other merit aid they may offer?

*

Not sure what you’re asking. Anyone who gets a NMF scholarship from a school, from a business, or from NMCorp is a NM Scholar.

The NMCorp scholarship is a ONE TIME 2500 award. Only for frosh year.

you can only receive one “official” NMF scholarship. However, schools that give BIG NMF scholarships will designate only a small amount as their “official NMF” scholarship.

My son had 2 NMF scholarships…the official one from my H’s company for 2500 per year. Plus…an “unofficial BIG NMF scholarship” (minus $1k official) from a university. He "gave up the $1k per year in order to get the 2500 per year from a company. So, he got the free tuition, free housing, study abroad money and the laptop…and he got the 2500 per year…which paid for his food.

Does that clarify things for you?
