DS is NMSF and considering A&M. The material we have received states that students who receive a scholarship of 1K or more from the Honors Program are eligible for the out-of-state tuition waiver. The out-of-state waiver is worth apprx. 15K a year. TAMU stacks their NM scholarships, and this is an exact duplication of what was sent to us regarding NMF scholarships:

“The typical package for a National Merit Finalist is…”
President’s Endowed Scholarship $12K
Director’s Excellence Award $10K
NM Recognition Award $24K
TAMU Sponsorship $2,600

Total over 4 years $48,600
Merit Plus (freshman year only) $2,000
Grand Total $50,600

There is also a 1K scholarship for Study Abroad

So first year it’s worth $14150 and other 3 years it’s worth $12,150, If out-of-state, you can add another apprx $15K for the tution waiver per year. The scholarship covers apprx. 88% first year, and 75% for the other 3.

The COA according to TAMU for 2009-2010 is as follows:

Tuition/Fees 8,336
Dorm 5,098
Meal Plan 2632
Total…$16,066

Also, A&M offered to fly my daughter out there for a look. (We’re in NY.) So that might be a good thing to watch your mail for. That was two years ago, though. Not sure if they’re still doing it.

Bumping and thanking Keilexandra for this. I searched and tried to find an updated list back when mine was looking. Kept being sent back to the same 6 year old list. Hopefully this job will be passed down and the forum can keep an up to date list every year!
Best of luck to this year’s seniors in getting the best scholarships!

You’re welcome! I’ll definitely be on CC through May 2009, and possibly after, but at that point I’ll solicit successors to keep this compilation updated.

Hello, I’m currently living in California and I’m planning to apply to the University of Arizona with the National Merit Finalist scholarship (assuming I get the NMF). The list states that U of A gives a full ride but after looking it up, I see that it only gives $20,000 to non-state residents + $3000 from the honors college. This covers only the tuition. Did I calculate something wrong? or is there any other scholarship besides the NMF that is guarenteed?

I see that Morningside College in Iowa lists this on their scholarship page:

“Full time students who have received recognition as a National Merit “Finalist” and identify Morningside College as their “first-choice” college are eligible for a tuition scholarship at Morningside College.”

Does that sound like an automatic scholarship? Doesn’t say anything about competition, only listing them as your first choice and attending a weekend event. Wonder if that is like the “scholarship days” that a lot of places have.

Anyway, thought it might be one to add to the list. It’s a private.

^Looks like a guaranteed scholarship, yes. However, the tuition amount is unspecified; I assume it would be significant, given the average entering statistics at Morningside.

^Big change. I’ll remove ASU from the list entirely.

ASU is still offering NMS scholarships, not as generous as before but quite a lot of money (11K in State, 17 OOS) plus an statement that they will consider additional amounts based on need + academics (merit?). In other words, they reduced the floor but we do not know what the ceiling is. Previously there was just one amount (15K and 25k). Hence it should still be on the list
