I don’t think Arizona is a full ride. It’s 12.5k instate, 20k OOS.

Arizona up the scholarship to $15K instate, $25K OOS this year.

^^^^ You’re right… It’s always best to go to the source…

https://financialaid.arizona.edu/scholarships/terms/2009-2011.aspx#national_merit_finalist</a></p>

But, note that the 2010 is not yet determined. Hopefully it will stay the same.

National Merit Finalist Award 2009-2010
** We are in the process of updating the terms and conditions of this award for 2010-2011. **

Award amount: $15,000 (Arizona Scholars) and $25,000 (Non-Arizona Scholars) per academic year

Availability: Four years (8 semesters total) for fall and spring semesters; based on academic year renewal requirements

Selection:
This award is offered to the Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition sponsored by the National Merit Corporation. Finalists must declare the UA as their first school of choice with the National Merit Corporation per the deadline set by the National Merit Corporation.

Eligibility:

Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Be classified as an Arizona resident for tuition purposes (for the $15,000 award)
Be classified as an non-Arizona resident for tuition purposes (for the $25,000 award)
Must verify your lawful presence as described under Arizona’s Proposition 300
Complete 30 UA units per academic year
Renewal Criteria:

Maintain at least a 3.00 cumulative UA grade point average per academic year

Complete at least 30 total UA units per academic year.

Category… Non-Resident …UA Housing
Tuition*… $22,266 …Room/Board $8,614

COA Total for tuition, room, and board (not counting books or misc) is about $31k… COA is $35k including all costs.

So, it looks like the NMF for OOS covers all tuition, and about half of housing, and no food nor books, and no other amenities (like laptop or study abroad) like some other NMFs do from other places.

https://financialaid.arizona.edu/money/estimated-cost.aspx</a></p>

BTW… It’s helpful if people provide the links to whatever NMF scholarships they add so that the amounts can be verified. Since amounts change all the time, a previous year’s award may be very different now (or not exist at all).

I received an email from Univ. of Arizona admissions saying the amount of the scholarship will remain the same next year, however they are still deciding on what criteria they will use for the scholarship in the future.

My son got a letter from the University of Central Florida today promising him tuition, room and board if he goes from NMSF to NMF…and a free cleaning service once a week if he lives in the honors dorm.

Too bad we can’t pass on these offers to someone else.

That would seal the deal for me were I a student!!

Arizona is rather confusing. The estimated COA is approx. 6k tuition/16k total for IS, 22k tuition/36k total for OOS; yet the NMF scholarship award is 15k IS/25k OOS for ONLY tuition.

For now, I have changed the notation to be “full tuition(+?) guaranteed?”.

Updated version. Please continue to post corrections, as schools change their policies et al.

o Full ride is defined as minimum tuition/room/board.

[National Merit | Honors Programs | Texas A&M University](<a href=“Honors - LAUNCH”>Honors - LAUNCH)

quote:
Students who progress to National Merit Finalist and who select Texas A&M University as their first choice institution would likely receive all of the following awards, with a total value of at least $38,600, in addition to other scholarships obtained through the Honors Programs (typically $10,000 or $12,000), Scholarships and Financial Aid, or individual Colleges or Departments at Texas A&M.

^^^

What’s the deal for OOS NMF at Texas A&M? Obviously, if an OOS NMF has to pay OOS tuition, then the above isn’t much help. BUT, I’ve heard that OOS students that receive a scholarship from Texas A&M then also get to pay the lower instate rate. Is that true. If so, then the NMF scholarship for OOS is quite good.

I’ve noted Texas A&M as 9k+ competitive, honorable mention, pending more specific information.

Texas Tech’s NMF scholarship seems to have improved since it was first added to this list. This page:

[Merit Scholarship Information](Texas Tech University Departments | TTU)

says it’s $12,000 plus $7,800 toward room and board. That amounts to more than the total cost of attendance for an in-state student, and just $3,795 short of tuition, room, and board for an out-of-state student.

^^^

where did you find the COA for OOS? The info that I found says the COA for OOS is $28k per year and that was for 2008 year…so I imagine it’s higher now and will be higher next year.

BTW…for all scholarships, people need to keep in mind that when an amount is set forth (rather than a statement of full tuition or full housing), a person has to realize that the current COA on a website is for the current year, and will be increased each of the 4 undergrad years.

The scholarships total $19,800.

I got my figures from College Board. The total in-state cost of attendance (including books and incidentals) adds up to $19,238, so actually the scholarships are just shy of the total cost if you’re in-state.

The out-of-state figures are $23,322 for tuition, room, and board, and $27,548 total for all costs, so it looks like our figures are about the same.

Some schools have a policy that full-tuition or full-ride scholarships increase along with rising costs, and some don’t. I’ve seen the policy posted on some schools’ websites, but usually not, and in either case it’s worth a phone call to make sure.

^^^

From what I’ve found…if the scholarship says “tuition for 4 years,” or “50% of tuition for four years”, then the amount goes up each year. BUT…it it’s a set amount, like $15,000 towards tuiton (which may be 50% at that moment), that amount doesn’t rise as tuition goes up.

TTU has been changed to the following:
Texas Tech U (IS full ride & OOS full tuition+ [19.8k] guaranteed)

NJIT offers scholarships (guaranteed, I think?) for full tuition, fees and room and board if you live on campus, without having to designate them as a first choice school.

Hi Keil,
Thank you so much for taking the time to compile and maintain this list! And administering and replying to all these questions and updates. You could probably create a service with this kind of research… That said, my daughter is a NMSF and a National Hispanic Rec Prog Scholar and your listings are pretty much right on target with what we have been receiving. Money is an issue for us - so the offers are VERY influential. It is a roller coaster ride to receive so much mail and do so much research on each web site - thanks again for your hard work - I will be bookmarking this site and referring to it often!

[Merit - Scholarships - Future Students - WSU](<a href=“Admissions | Washington State University”>Admissions | Washington State University)

My high school sends a ton of students to WSU, and most of the people I know love it there. If you are interested in a largish school in a rural college-town environment, WSU might be worth a look. They have top programs in architecture, advertising, civil engineering, communications, and pre-vet (among others).
