So my son looks like he will be a semifinalist and hopefully and finalist for nation merit based on his PSAT score last year. He is also a good swimmer. So we are trying to find a good school that offers good scholarships for NMF and or academic merit along with a mens swim program. What makes this challenging is for swimmers they have to sign by November before most of the scholarships are announced.

So the question is he has 5 or 6 schools that he is interested in based on swimming and engineering. Does anyone have any insight on the scholarships for these schools and the likelihood of him getting a large one? These are provably lis tin the order of the school he would like to swim for.

Ohio State
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Auburn
Texas A&M
Alabama (this one is a full ride option from what I read)

PSAT 227
ACT 33
GPA 4.22

I don’t think male swim scholarships are “full head” are they?

Since your son would be engineering, he’d get an additional 2500 per year from Bama.

Also, he’d be a strong candidate for their elite Computer-Based Honors Program.

What do you mean by Full head? He wont get a full ride fro swimming at most of these Schools but would get some.

Texasdaddy…U of Minn has a $10K/year for 4 years NMF scholarship (Gold Scholar) with an additional $1K-$2K/year “official” NMSC scholarship (anything above the $1K based on financial need). With his GPA and test scores, I’m assuming his class rank is fairly high as well, so he’s probably in line for a Gold National scholarship (top 5% class rank) which will pay the difference between IS and OOS tuition. He’ll also be considered for all other university wide merit scholarships (Presidential, Bentson, etc.) based on the strength of his overall application, which I’m guessing from the stats you posted would be very strong.

If he submits an application by the early consideration/priority scholarship deadlines, he should have an admission answer in November and scholarship package offer by mid-December (if I remember my timeline correctly).

Minnesota far and away offers the best NMF packages amongst the schools in the Big Ten, and their Chem Eng program is ranked 3rd in the nation (not sure about the other engineering disciplines). I’ll also second Mom2CK’s support of Bama’s NMF scholarship program. It’s an outstanding offer, and guaranteed full rides are a wonderful thing to have in your hip pocket as he applies to various schools. Our D1 chose U of Minn as their scholarship package for her was very near a full ride, but Bama was her second choice sight unseen.

Congrats to your S on his grades/test scores and good luck with his college search!!

*What do you mean by Full head? He wont get a full ride fro swimming at most of these Schools but would get some. *

Full head means a full ride athletic scholarship. I don’t think any NCAA schools gives a full ride athletic scholarship for male swimming. Male swimming scholarships are equivalency (divided however the school chooses).

*Not all sports scholarships are full ride like basketball and football, these are called “head count” sports; most are classed as “equivalency” sports, like college swimming.

The NCAA allows each division 1 swimming program 9.9 scholarships for men and 14 for women. *

What area of engineering is your son interested? Since the state of Alabama is home to the second largest research park in the nation Cummings Research Park, it offers many internship, research, and co-op opportunities.
Thanks for all the replies. He is not yet sure what part of engineering he wants to go into yet. He like Nuclear and Chem, Elec ECT…

The big question about Bama is the swimming and the coaches. So he will get to visit 5 schools on there dime so will be a good chance to see the schools.

I thik some schools give full rides for simming but most wont becuase there are not many out there for the guys. So depending on the school he could get up to 50%.

I don’t know about Bama’s swimming coaches, so a visit would help clarify things.

If you visit, be sure to spend an extra day checking out the academics…

If you decide to visit Bama, this is what you need to do…

set up a campus tour time online…try for the early morning one.

tour time and date
student name & contact info
test scores and GPA
(if a likely NMF, indicate so)
intended major
professional interests (pre-med, pre-law, pre-dental, etc)
interest in Computer Based Honors program and/or University Fellows Program (if desired)
Also, include any thing else that interests you about the school…such as touring the new Science and Engineering Complex and Shelby Hall.

Allison will arrange the rest of the day…meeting with dept heads, honors faculty, touring honors dorms, etc.

Here’s a little video that gives you a look at Bama’s College of Arts and Sciences. It shows a glimpse of Bama’s new Science and Engineering Complex (Shelby Hall was Phase I…there are 4 phases). The new complex is huge.

In addition USC gives out 150+ full tuition scholarships each year to outstanding applicants. Your son needs to complete his application by Dec 1 to be considered.

Does anyone have information on what Ohio State will off for nation Merit?

Ohio State is not generous to NMF.

Has your son taken SAT? For him to move onto being NMF from NMSF, he requires an SAT score, supposedly at least around 2000 range.

Yes he scored over a 2000 and has a 4.3 average and top 4% so i think there are other Scholorships there just not sure how much. I think he can get 50% Swimming so would not need to much.
