I know that college destinations have been mentioned in other threads on here, but I’m curious to see where the NMFs on this forum are going to school. Post what school you/your child plans on attending and why below.
I’m going to be attending the University of Kentucky. Their scholarship offer is matched only by UCF in generosity for a regular 4 year student like myself (offers like that of OU or UA may be as generous if you use the 5th year of tuition they include, but I most likely wouldn’t), the people in Kentucky are incredibly friendly, the campus-- and Lexington itself for that matter-- is gorgeous, the dorms are some of the best in the country, they have a big emphasis on undergraduate research (which is huge to a premed kid like me), and kids there seem to love their school.

While some may not use the “5th year,” what many do is use those 2 semesters to pay for 2 summer abroad trips, which Alabama allows.
Alabama will give the OOS NMF, $12,500 (a semester’s worth of money) and the student uses that for plane fare, study abroad tuition, housing, food, personal expenses, etc…for a summer abroad experience. This can be done twice.
I don’t think any school does this…extremely generous.
My D has not yet decided where she is going, and won’t until probably some time in April, but if she goes with the school for the NMF package it will also be UK.
I’m going to Wichita State University in Kansas. I get OOS tuiton paid for 4 years along with housing, food, and a $1000 per year stipend for books. They have a really good (I think, anyway) aerospace engineering program with lots of opportunities for internships, co-ops, and maybe research. WSU is the #1 funded program in aerospace research. Not interested in studying abroad so I’m not worried about not having money for that.
Our daughter will be attending The University of Alabama. The generous AP and CLEP policy, along with college credits earned through UAEC, means she will enter with 60+ credits and will chose to graduate in three years and use the additional four semesters toward study abroad and grad school. The OU, UCF, and Kentucky scholarships are also nice, but Bama offers everything she’s looking for in a school. It’s an amazing opportunity that she cannot wait to embrace! Roll Tide!
My son will attend Alabama. The NMF package is incredible with 5 years tuition, 1 year of housing, $3500/year stipend, $2000 to study abroad, and an ipad. The Honors College is very impressive, and the Dean of the HC is wonderful and personal. We feel like he will be taken care of while in Tuscaloosa. ROLL TIDE!!!
^^
That 5th year is so enticing, particularly since it can be used towards the STEM/MBA program or as mentioned above to do 2 summer abroads. Imagine getting to go abroad for two summers for free.
^^ DS will attend Alabama for all of the reasons stated above…also invited to the CBHP Interview Weekend…he’d attend even if he doesn’t get into CBHP (hopeful reverse jinx there!). Turning down lots of other great choices and scholarships elsewhere to go where the “Fit” was right.
I will be attending University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). It’s a less popular school for NMFs, but family/friends in the Dallas area, an outstanding Neuroscience program, Honors program, and great research facilities were a big draw for me. Also, the dorms are suites with private bedrooms, a living room, and a shared bathroom!
I will get full tuition and fees, 2000 for study abroad, and a $9000/year stipend that will cover room and board
D will attend Pomona College. No NMF money unless she gets one of the $2500 NMSC awards or I think there are just a few (like maybe 6?) small scholarships sponsored by the college.
I’m planning on attending Drexel University in Philly; NMFs get full tuition ($42,000+ value per year), and I’m waiting to hear if I’ll be able to stack my original merit scholarship on top to cover all my other costs. If everything goes as planned, I’ve got a full ride. I’m doing the 5 year, 3 co-op option majoring in Finance, and the scholarship’s gonna cover tuition for all 5 years. My GPA just needs to remain above a 2.75, but I need a 3.0 to remain in the honors program anyway, so I’m gonna make sure that mine’s above that.
Daughter will be going to U of Alabama! Although she also liked and applied to NMF scholarship schools such as OU, Drexel and Fordham, which also have generous scholarship possibilities, in the end the decision was based on availability of majors she wants to pursue.
Does anyone have any advice about University of New Mexico? They offer a 4 year full ride which seems pretty good but dont know much about the scholastic reputation of the school. They do have an Honors College.
The NM scholarship is therefore approximately $33,423 per year and the estimated 2015-2016 Cost of Attendance is $34,920 including tuition, fees, R&B, books and supplies, transportation, and $2000 miscellaneous. That’s way over tuition and very near a full ride.
While I don’t put much stock in rankings, I would suggest looking at the Common Data set and decide if it fits your kid. Lots of kids in remedial classes and very low graduation rates, probably mostly because IS kids get free tuition for 7 semesters based on a fairly low HS GPA. We have about half of our senior class attend there every year and I will say that UNM’s teaching reputation seems to be pretty good. However, there were also news articles a couple years about the math department almost losing accreditation.
Son is deciding between OU and Texas A&M. He has more money from A&M, and it is ranked #1 in his major. That’s probably where he’ll go, but he’s still thinking. We’re going back for 1 more visit to each over Spring Break.
Son is still considering Kentucky, Alabama and Cincinnati. He is leaning towards Michigan State. Their package includes room and board, in-state tuition ($13,000), $,4000 + $3,000 for Study Abroad, and a $2500 Professorial Assistantship. Other merit scholarships will also stack, so it’s likely that the COA will be close to UC and possibly UA. He is also waiting on some more selective schools, but the NPCs are showing $7-$10,000/yr. While that seems like an incredible deal, we have 4 more kids to put through school and aren’t really in a position to pay more out of pocket than we have to.
