Hello my fellow CC’ers! So I just emailed my principal asking about receiving official notification for semifinalists and she wants me to see her tomorrow to see if she has an official notification. This is her first year of being principal so I guess she might not know what she’s looking for.
My question is: Do you guys know what we should be looking for? Does the principal receive a 9x11 large envelope or regular envelope? What are the contents of the notification? (ie. a list of names, access codes?) How thick is it? I just want to make sure I am prepared to help her tomorrow if needed.
sorry if this is a weird question
I really hopes she has it so I can offer a second confirmation for 222 in CA and start booking flights for college tours!!!
Yes he was @JBStillFlying & she saw a couple of the other 216 SI kids during the school day who also weren’t invited to that meeting. I haven’t notified Art - would you like to do the honors?
@sewin2music it’s two 9x11 envelopes on thin and one fat. The thin as a list of names and the info they need to creat their portal and the second has the magic book with the list of all NMSF. If you are the only NMSF in your school ask her if you can keep the book!!
We have sent applications with D listing NMSF. She was several points above last year’s cutoff and even though we still do not have official notice I really don’t think it’s a big deal. I don’t know that anyone has been punished for breaking the embargo.
I called the national merit office this morning and was told it is ok to put the award on the application and submit before 9/13. He specifically said it’s fine because it’s on the students application, not accessible by the public.
@LMHS73 Can’t recall why 217 was pulled back originally - GC’s are saying contradictory things at your kid’s school - is that correct?
Would be happy to tip off Art because it really does sound like NV might not be over based on what you are saying. He can post that info. or make the call based on addiional information that he has. Just let me know (PM if you want).
D received a copy of the NM package at University of North Texas - it’s tuition, room and board + $500 for books. They are ramping up a NM program. The school has a great music program, especially for jazz.
Way too close for D to consider, but a good middle choice between TTU and UTD - sports, college town, not Lubbock :))
Jumping ahead in the thread with news from Kansas: Cut-off is 219 according to a room filled w/guidance counselors & principal. I don’t know if that info has been revealed on Art’s blog, but I’ll check the final results thread to see if KS is locked-down already.
If any Kansans are lurking, 219 and above IS NMSF. 218 and below is not. If I’m giving you sad news, I am so sorry. One of DS’s friends has a 218 and really, really, really needed our state flagship free (base) tuition for NMF. It’s worth $10,500 at the moment. DS and I are both feeling rotten for his friend right now.
On that note, DS came in after his fall sport and FORGOT…FORGOT!!!..to tell me that he was a NMSF!! HE FORGOT. Only occurred to him about 30 minutes ago and then he said, “Oh, yeah, I’m a National Merit Semifinalist.” UGH!!! Now yes - I did know already that he was most likely going to make it that far, because I’ve been following this thread. But I didn’t say a peep to him! Anyway, he’s very happy - but his score was a bit less worrisome than his older brother’s, who was literally On The Bubble for Class of 2015. For those of you who were here in 2014/15, you may remember my hysterics at every. step. of. the. process.
Anyway, that’s the news I have for this evening - given with some mixed emotions at the moment.
Editing to add that maybe@flatKansas was one of the posters seeking the KS cut-off? Not sure, but here’s the info if it’s needed.
@GoAskDad KS wasn’t completely nailed down on Art’s blog as of this afternoon. Still showed up as <=219. He’d probably appreciate the update because your information sounds definitive.
GCs at our TX high school still hasn’t told the kids anything! I’ve checked DS’s college board account several times to make sure he really does have a 221!
D received her letter from the NMSC today (via school GC). It literally says (paraphrasing) that except for your HS principal and your family, this information is confidential until Sept. 13th when NMSC “will release the names of Semifinalists to the news media nationwide.” They bold the word confidential.
That surprised me and explains some of the secrecy at schools. Also, a friend who is a GC in another school told me that The Book arrived at their school today after she double checked yesterday.
@3scoutsmom: I went back to my records and found that my kids’ school wait until the Monday after Labor Day to tell them 3 years ago. Therefore, I won’t know for sure for another 10 days.
@TexasMommy90 … right there with you … our Principal will likely release the info only on the 13th . DD (international student) has exams at the moment, so if NMSF happens, we’re likely to only have 3 weeks to the deadline…
We haven’t heard anything either and I work at a middle school just down the street from my Ds high school. I am harassing the heck out of her counselor. I wouldn’t worry too much. Everyone says some schools are just cautious. Even though i am giving myself ulcers.
My kid’s school knows the game but has not released yet, probably just because they have their own precious bureaucratic procedures to adhere to. The principal was a few years behind me as a student at the same school, and we played the same sport. I know he would tell me if I barged into his office, but I am trying to maintain a bit of dignity.
