NMS not credited on tuition statement

My DD is a rising sophomore who was awarded a college-based National Merit Scholarship for a fixed amount each year. Freshman year everything went smoothly. The school credited her with half of her annual award each semester on her tuition bill. In March we received the renewal notice from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which we returned promptly.

Earlier this month we received the online tuition bill with no mention of the NMS credit. Several phone calls were fruitless. They suggested we call the NMSC, who verified that DD's name was on the roster which was sent to the school and that the school would be receiving a check on September 3. I called back and they admitted it's probably just sitting on someone's desk waiting to be entered. Since the bill was due, I paid it but left a balance for the scholarship amount. I hate that it looks like I "owe" them money. I keep checking but so far no change.

Has anyone else had this problem? Am I worrying over nothing?

Our school bills before the NMS checks show up. We usually pay the whole bill, and the school reimburses us for the NMS very quickly as soon as it shows up. We might be able to just withhold payment like you did, but I never thought to ask. Might have to do that next time! Anyways, we’ve never had an issue with the NMS showing up, but it does come a little late.

Yes, same here. NMS money is always slightly delayed. It will get there. I wouldn’t worry too much.

The lady at the accounting office suggested I withhold. There was even a box to check that said something to the effect of “I am expecting additional financial aid that is not reflected on the statement.” So I’ll just chill for now and follow up later. Her enrollment is confirmed and that’s what’s important. Thanks, moms!
