I just received a letter asking me to renew my National Merit Scholarship (the $500/year from NMSC) with a bunch of online stuff to fill out.

I haven't been as active in college groups/clubs/organizations/life as I wanted to be, and my grades are good, but not as good as my high school 4.0. If I have to renew my scholarship, is there any way that I won't get my scholarship renewed? I know it's not that much relative to my whole scholarship package, but still... every dollar counts.

Anybody know? I know most of the posts here are about NMSF's and NMF's figuring out how to maximize their scholarship $$.

If I’m not mistaken, anything past the first year is coming from the university and you should consult your scholarship office with regards to the minimum GPA necessary to keep the scholarship.

I’m pretty sure my $500 scholarship check was through NMSC because it had their logo and all. Most of my scholarship does come from the university, but each semester, $250 has been “late” by a month or so and I’ve had go to and specially pick it up from the bursar’s office and jump through a couple hoops making sure I’m enrolled full time, etc.

NMSC on its own gives only a one time $2500 scholarship. If you are getting $500 a year, it is either from a corporation or the college. Which one is it? If it is a corporation, you can call up NMSC and find out what the renewal criteria are of the sponsor. If your college has given the scholarship, find out from the college aid office as to what their requirements are for renewal. In general, you need good grades and not necessarily 4.0s. So I would not sweat it.

It comes through NMSC but NMSC is not paying for it. NMSC is just the person who manages the transaction. Do your parents work for a sponsoring corporation?

Find out who the sponsor is or call NMSC and find out who the sponsor is and what are the renewal criteria. They will help you.

Maybe someone who has been through this will chime in. If not, then send an email to your scholarship office and/or the National Merit Corporation. Sorry I’m not of more help…

Ok, yeah. It’s college-sponsored, then. My parents definitely don’t work for sponsoring corporations, and I just found an old letter from NMSC that said college-sponsored. Weird, isn’t it that I can get a check with their letterhead and it’s from my college. I’m not too worried about my college renewing my scholarship, most everything at KU is numbers-based, and as long as you have a 3.25 or higher, you’re good.

I know this is a late reply but my daughter has to do this on line thing same as yours every year. I think it is just procedure and as long as you do it, you keep the scholarship. I don’t even think that ask your grades.
